Precious Moments
Today was a writing day for me, and since my son had a paper due next week for school, I took him along. We had a nice day together, and I marveled that he is now old enough to occupy himself for hours on end in a bookstore. Though he has always loved books (he comes by that honest) he would not have had the stamina or attention span to stay in a bookstore for the better part of a day until recently. He hung in there though. Can't say he got alot of writing done, but he at least stayed busy looking at the vast selection of books until I said I was ready to go. Of course, he did finagle a frappucino from his dear old mom after a couple of hours!
As we were riding home, he was remarking on the wide variety of people that are in a Barnes and Noble in a given day. I agreed that there were lots of interesting characters there. He asked me if I noticed a handicapped guy who had sat near us briefly. He went on to tell me that he had been near the guy as they both looked at books on military stuff. The guy was looking at a book on helicopters and remarked to my son that, though he couldn't ever serve in the military, he had a dream of flying helicopters. This really touched my son, and he told me that he made sure to smile at the guy whenever he saw him for the rest of the day. I had to turn my face to the window and compose myself so he would not see the tears welling up in my eyes. This is a child who frustrates me so often for his negative attitude and rude comments. At times I think he doesn't have a compassionate bone in his body and is a walking talking arguement waiting to happen. And then I get a moment like this one. As we drove, I whispered a thank you to God for letting me have this moment with this boy-- whose heart can still break for a handicapped man with a dream. And I knew, no matter what I see at home, there is hope for the type of man he will grow up to be.
And then tonight, I got to listen to my four year old boy say his prayers while my toddler toddled around in the darkness and giggled. As I listened to the sound of her little baby footsteps and laughter paired with my little boy's earnest prayers of thankfulness for his family and his home, my heart welled up again with gratefulness to God for allowing me to hear my son's heart reflected in his prayers.
I go to sleep tonight reflecting on the blessings of motherhood as I realize that the precious moments far outweigh the challenging ones.

I am so thankful that the Lord allows us to see those glimpses into our children's hearts. What an encouragement!
After a frustrating day with a cantankerous, teething toddler, my oldest son blessed me with a beautiful card he had made for me. Sigh...yes, the good definitely outweighs the bad.
Blessings,
Angela
