Why I Shop At A More Expensive Grocery Store
Yesterday I went to the grocery store. I go there more than I even want to admit to myself. The folks that work there know me after all the years I have shopped there. When I was checking out, I noticed with fresh eyes how friendly these folks are. They asked if I found everything okay. They asked if I was having a nice day. They smiled. They fussed over my baby and asked if she wanted a balloon. (They also give out free cookies over in the bakery.) They bag my groceries and take them out of the cart for me. As I was leaving, the bagger asked if I would like him to walk my groceries to the car. Then the manager of the store came over and asked if I wanted them to take the cart to the curb so I could drive up. (I said no to both of them because I had to go to the Starbucks and get a coffee. Oh yeah, there is a Starbucks in the store too-- you can't beat that!) As I was walking out, another worker smiled warmly and wished me a nice day.
Lots of my friends tease me for not shopping at a warehouse store or at least going to Walmart. They think that with "all these kids" I should be more conscious of saving the big bucks. And while I do occasionally visit Wally World or Target for my needs, mostly I shop at Harris Teeter because of the scene I just described. Oh sure, they are a tad more expensive, but if you shop their specials, you can save literally thousands of dollars per year (I do). And in return, you get a good old fashioned service experience. These folks go the extra mile to welcome their customers and make them feel valued. This doesn't happen anymore in so many establishments. I want to patronize the stores who do. Stores like Chick fil a. A Burger King or McDonalds just can't compare with dining there. The same goes for other, cheaper, grocery stores. I just don't get the little extras that the Teeter offers. And paying a few cents more is worth it to me to get that. I want stores like this to stay in business!
As I was leaving, I noticed that the store was pretty busy with other customers shopping and picking up last minute Valentine flowers and stuff. I guess there are other people who feel this way too. I truly love, as their little jingle goes, "my Harris Teeter."

Feb. 14, 2007 - I know what you mean...

After Boxing Day we had some important, expensive purchases to make in terms of some skis and some other exercise type clothes. We went to the big box stores and nobody knew what they were talking about. I mean, I know nothing, and they knew less than I did.
Then we went to the locally owned store, where price is a little higher but selection is much better and people actually give advice and get to know you. I'll never go anywhere else again!
