What We've Been Doing

Just an update on our schooling adventures, as I do try to use this blog to some extent as both a record of our learning experiences, as well as information for those who are currently homeschooling or considering homeschooling.  I know that seeing what others do and how they spend their days helps me alot, and inspires me as well!  So, just to post a bit of an update as we wrap up one study and launch another this week:

We finished our study of artists.  This study began in January after we came back from Christmas and we completed it about two weeks ago.  It was alot of fun, but I was ready to move on.  This is why I do unit studies instead of buying a packaged curriculum.  I like the flexibility and freedom to do what we are interested in, then move on when we are ready instead of feeling bound to a guidebook telling us what to do.

This past week, we read books about St. Patrick's Day.  We read:

St. Patrick's Day In The Morning by Eve Bunting

Clever Tom and The Leprechaun by Linda Shute

Jamie O'Rourke and The Big Potato by Tomie De Paola

St. Patrick by Tomie De Paola

This week we will read a few books about spring, as we are definitely feeling like spring down here in the south!  I have these books in the library basket waiting to be read:

A Handful of Dirt by Raymond Bial

Sun Bread by Elisa Kleven

When Will It Be Spring? by Catherine Walters

A big thank you to Dawn at By Sun And Candlelight for her booklists, which helped me so much with both the St. Patrick's Day and Spring books I requested from the library.

I have also requested these books to put out and just "play" with a bit this week:

Can You Find It Too?  (a book about finding details in art)  The kids had fun with Can You Find It? so I requested this sequel, even though our art study is officially "over."

Math Mind Games by Hemme Heinrich and Math Mini Mysteries by Sandra Markle

Mozart For Young Minds (Cd) another suggestion from Dawn!

Finally, this week we are beginning a study of Little House on the Prairie, which I anticipate will take us about six weeks to complete.  This will wrap up our school year nicely, before we take a break in the summer.  I am combining Queen Homeschool's Literature Nature Study and Veritas Press' Literature Guide to make our own study of Little House.  I am very excited about this, and how it all came together.  I found that Progeny Press also has a study as well, but contained myself to just using the two other guides!  I think those two will keep us busy enough!
