Finishing Up The Year
The last days of our school year are upon us. Because we began our year in late July, we can finish a bit earlier, which I like. Yesterday the older two both did their last lesson with Growing With Grammar. I really liked this program and will continue to use it. I have not gotten very far with the GWG book for my first grader-- but since it is a combined 1st and 2nd grade program, I will just pick it up next year.
We will finish up the year by doing some Math and Writing activities using books we got from the library. I checked out a fun writing book by Joe Rhatigan called Write now! : the ultimate, grab-a-pen, get-the-words-right, have-a-blast writing book. I have had this book on hold for several months and just now got it. I will be pairing this book with the I Hate Mathematics book by Marilyn Burns. I hope that just by having fun with these books instead of doing a prescribed curriculum, they will have fun learning-- sneaky!
I am also hoping to get more intentional about reading aloud. Our Little House unit never really took hold-- partly because of the disjointedness of our days lately and partly because of plain old lack of interest. And so, I threw in the towel-- some things just aren't worth pushing. But I do want to find some books we can read together and enjoy. Any suggestions? We have enjoyed The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe and From The Mixed Up Files of Mrs Basil E Frankwiler. I am hoping to read them a few of my favorites from childhood: North To Freedom, Mandy, and Danny, The Champion of The World. I think these are where I will start. With having a toddler, I tend to shy away from reading aloud, as things get a bit dicey when we try to read with her, and I don't like reading during her nap, as that is my time to get things done that I can't do when she is up and I am on guard all the time. Having a toddler is tough!
And so, that is just a little update on our schooling adventures around here.
