More On Tick Removal
Ok, I stand corrected. A long-time reader, Tina, sent this addendum to what I posted about tick removal. I was grateful to Tina for taking the time to warn us all of the dangers of doing what my post recommended! Here is what she forwarded to me:
This is kind of "out of the blue" but I wanted to let you know some info. about tick removal. It was posted on the MOMYS list to soak a tick in alcohol so that it would release. However, a mom who had 3 children with Lyme's disease wrote in and said to never do that. She said if you do, you may cause the tick to regurgitate infectious material into the bite which would increase the risk of tick borne diseases in the victim. Instead she said to never use fingernail polish, vaseline, alcohol, etc but rather use tweezers to extract the entire tick as quickly as possible. Then save the tick in alcohol and take it to a doctor if necessary.
After reading the post, I looked at several medical websites to verify the info The few I looked at advised not to use anything except tweezers.
