Saving A Nativity
I have a little nativity scene my mother in law gave to me years ago. It is really too small to set out amongst our other decorations-- it would just get lost in the shuffle. Well, this year my girls wanted to decorate their room for Christmas, so they asked me if I would let them use any decorations I didn't need. Sure! I remember doing this as a child. They busily set out to clean up their room and make it so pretty and festive. I love seeing these early homemaker tendencies come out in them!
I decided to give them the nativity to put out in their room. A few minutes later, they came back downstairs to tell me that the nativity was missing Joseph! Horrors! A informed me that she just could not put out a nativity without a Joseph! So, they gave it back to me. Now, what am I going to do with an incomplete nativity?? I thought about it for awhile. I considered just throwing it away, but that seemed wrong somehow. Then I had a great idea! (At least it seems great to me.)
I am going to take the Baby Jesus and Mary and put them on my dresser all year to remind me of the kind of mother I want to be. I am going to make a little card with Luke 2:19 on it to remind me to treasure "all these things." I wrote a devotion about this that will be running this month on the online devotions on Proverbs. (You can sign up for these devotions at www.proverbs31.org.) I want to learn to treasure all these things. God chose Mary for a reason, and I think her ability to have faith in all circumstances was part of His choice. So, I want to pursue that quality myself. Though I still would never qualify as a candidate to be the mother of the Lord, at least I can try to emulate her character!
I am also going to take the three little angels that are left in the set and set them out in my girls' room-- one for each of my girls. I am going to write a little card to go with them about the angels watching over them as a reminder to them that God loves them and that we are praying for their safety as they grow. So, I don't have to throw away the nativity and it can still be used. I love that this little nativity can now be used all year round and will serve as a reminder of God's love and concern for us.
