AHEm is embarking on a new project to enlighten our legislators about homeschooling laws here in MA ad is looking for volunteer help. Please read thier email below and see their website.

Educating Legislators
During the coming year, AHEM will embark on a campaign to educate Massachusetts legislators about homeschooling. We plan to hand deliver informational packets to state senators and representatives. Included in these packets will be AHEMs handout, Information for Elected Officials, which we will revise to make more visually appealing by the addition of graphics, photographs, and color.
You can assist us with this campaign by:
* volunteering to help assemble the packets, or
* volunteering to help deliver the packets, or
* by your monetary contribution, which will help defray the costs of paper and printing (AHEM is a 501(c)3 charitable organization, and all contributions are tax-deductible).
Volunteering for AHEM will be a good way for high school age homeschoolers to accrue community service hours. Younger children who want to help are welcome if accompanied by an adult.
Please send us any ideas you may have and please let us know if you are interested in helping out. We will keep you posted as the project gets underway and more details become available.
If you received this message as a forwarded email and would like to be added to the Friends of AHEM list to receive updates on issues that may affect Massachusetts homeschoolers, as well as special notice of AHEM events and field trips, reply to this email (info@ahem.info) with your name, address, town, and zip code.
If you choose to forward this email, PLEASE forward all of it, including signature below.
Here's an interesting website that was passed along to me; Project FeederWatch. Here is the description from their website of what it is:
"Project FeederWatch is a winter-long survey of birds that visit feeders at backyards, nature centers, community areas, and other locales in North America. FeederWatchers periodically count the highest numbers of each species they see at their feeders from November through early April. FeederWatch helps scientists track broadscale movements of winter bird populations and long-term trends in bird distribution and abundance."
It looks like you can still sign up through March. There is a cost to this project, though - $15. Please see their website for all the details.
Passing along an email I received about an unusual opportunity on a cruise ship.

Happy Patriotic Friday! FirstGov.gov has a website of recreational activities including hiking in National Parks, educational programs at Historical Parks, fishing at Army Corps of Engineer sites, and way more! I'd say it's a website with a boatload of things to do, but there are so many land-based activities as well, that the metaphore just, well, doesn't hold water. :-) Please check out Recreation.gov for things to do in your state.
There's an idea going around that seems to be picking up steam called Patriotic Friday's. A couple of years ago, I remember an idea going around the internet to wear red on Fridays to show our love of Old Glory. Patriotic Fridays is a great way to add to that in a much more in-depth way. Please see Show Your American Pride! for more great ideas and information. I will attempt to post pertinent links each Friday this summer to add to this movement.
There's a Homeschoolers Chess Club open to all meeting at the Tufts Library, 46 Broad St. in Weymouth every Monday from 10:00 am to 11:00 am.
The kids playing are generally 'school-aged', and there's a children's room at the library for younger siblings.
Unfortunately, I have no more information than that, but since it is a drop-in (but not a 'drop-off'), you could just show up to ask any questions you might have. :-)
They are now on summer break. I assume they will continue in September, but I will find out and post it here as soon as I know.
I just heard about this place in RI offering a homeschooling gymnastics class. For more details, please contact them directly.

Suffice it to say, the Carnival of Homeschooling is a wonderful resource of information; about homeschooling, for homeschoolers, and musings of homeschoolers. Beware of the addictive nature of this Carnival, though. It's so easy to spend hours and hours following the links! ;-) (At least it is for me! lol)
