I'M SO EXCITED!!! I'm actually going to have my very own old-fashioned red schoolhouse! We will be doing our homeschooling days in a real little country schoolhouse! But it wasn't always a schoolhouse, and it needs some work done on it.
What it was originally was my playhouse that my dad built for me when I was little, it measures 8' x 12' and the ceiling is 6' or so high (good thing we are short!) Around 6 years ago (possible 8, they are starting to run together) we moved it from my parents back yard to our side yard. And just yesterday we moved it again, from right up next to the house to further over in the yard to make way for the new driveway that will accompany the new garage by husband is building.
Before we could have it moved (on a big tilt-bed tow truck) I paid my son and our cousin's son to empty it. Well worth the money so I didn't have to mess with it, there was a lot of junk in there. All the stuff will be sorted through very thoroughly before going back into storage in my husbands old garage which will be our new storage building.
On the way home from A.C. Moore today, the thought occured to me that the playhouse (as we've always called this particular outbuilding) would make an adorable little old fashioned country schoolhouse. Slap on some red paint, trim in black, and it will be the cutest thing ever! The thought just kept gnawing at me the rest of the afternoon. I wondered if my husband would consider me nuts for such an idea, but he surprised me and he's all for it. He said that I'm going to make it look really cute with all the ideas I'd told him about.
I really figured that he'd not like the idea of a bright red building sticking out like a sore thumb in our yard, and he said that it sounds really cute, and that he's happy to see me so excited about doing something. My mind has been buzzing all evening, I've drawn out the floorplan for furniture placement, where to hang the maps, put the bookcases, etc. I've also been making the list of the few things we'll need to buy, like tile for the floor, red outside paint, steps to the door, and my husband insists that we add on a bellfry with a real working bell. Everything will be fairly easy and rather inexpensive, but I do wonder where in the world I'll ever find a bell! Hmmmm, think I'll go and check on ebay! I can't wait to post some pics of before, during, and after! |
