Jan. 29, 2006 - On the Side - The Danger of Going too Far (Legalism)
One warning. The other thing we as a people are really prone to is rules and formats. Being legalistic about your health life or marital life isn't going to encourage growth any more than being legalistic about your spiritual life does. It's a fine line walking a balance between obsession and legalism and health and self-control. When we start to think that one particular thing is the answer - if I exercise regularly my relationship with God improves - we become legalistic about that thing. Whether it's not yelling at our kids, reading our Bible, or going for a walk. That "key" is placed on a pedastal and suddenly becomes more important than the goal you were striving for. It's very important to remember that these things are tools or aids, important, and helpful, but not the key or magic word that will fix everything. They are not the goal. Walking every day isn't my goal. A healthy body and intimacy with my King are my goal. I try to always bear the goal in mind. Because, of course, once you start to slip into legalism guilt begins to have power in your life (and that's a topic we've already covered in another "On the Side") |

Jan. 12, 2006 - On the Side: Spiritual Gifts
Read About It: 1 Corinthians 12-14, Romans 12, Ephesians 4:1-16 People always quote 1 Corinthians 12 when they talk about spiritual gifts but I was actually surprised to discover there are actually multiple parallel passages ont he subject. And by the way, yes, the famous love passage is part of the gifts of the spirit teaching. This is a controvertial subject. There's lots of arguments that have to do with theology and doctrine and not so much to do with walking out your faith. So I'm not going to teach my theological beliefs on this issue. Instead, I'm going to leave it to you to read, and pray, and determine what "gifts" means to you, and what that looks like in practice. Only then can you determine if your gifts are currently a raging fire or dying embers. Note the common theme of "body" and "unity" in all of the gifts passages. |

Jan. 9, 2006 - On the Side - Making Time
I debated about listing this as a quote (because technically it is one) but... decided not to. I know we all say we don't have enough time. We don't have enough time for God, to eat well, to exercise, any area we need to work on suddenly is lacking the time for development. This is I think a major crutch for pretty much all of us, and lo and behold, I got a great email on the subject:
But a lack of time is really an excuse. Its the story you tell yourself when youre not willing to make something enough of a priority to take the time. The number one obstacle to achievement is not making a true decision to achieve. The word decision is Latin in origin with "de" meaning from and "caedere" meaning to cut. To decide literally means to commit to an outcome while cutting yourself off from any other possibility; there is no other option than to succeed." The issue is not that we don't have enough time, but rather that we don't choose to make finding time for this particular area a priority. We have time to read blogs, surf forums, watch TV, sleep in, read books, soak in the tub, (I don't think I need to go on) so we also have time to pray, study, exercise, and become better people. All we have to do is make a decision to reassign the time we have. Next time you hear yourself saying you don' have time, stop and re-evaluate your heart. Do you really not have time (in which case if this is important you need to drop some committments to suit your priorities) or do you just choose not to give the time you have to that thing?
The above quote was taking from Rachelle Taylor's weekly email On Purpose www.rachelletaylor.com |

Oct. 30, 2005 - On The Side - Guilt
Talking about "doing" I want to say: Always beware guilt. God never motivates, or convicts, using guilt. If you feel guilty about memorizing or meditating (or not memorizing and not meditating) then they have become something more than the tool or discipline that they were intended to be. Step back and allow God to realign your heart to His true purposes.
Guilt2 a : the state of one who has committed an offense especially consciously b : feelings of culpability especially for imagined offenses or from a sense of inadequacy3 : a feeling of culpability for offenses |
