It's taken a lot to get used to living out here in what one would consider "the country".  Driving half and hour to go into town.  Waiting in line at the post office while the person in front of you chats with the postal clerk about a mutual friend and his troubled offspring.  Having a DMV office in the back of our local grocery store.....these are all things you can expect when you live in the boonies.  Here are two items from our local paper, The Rural Virginian:

First Stoplight Comes to County

              ~and~

Squirrel Starts Brush Fire

As you can see - we live a dangerous life out here.  So today, my oldest and I went over to check out the new stop light.  First we went to the main street of our town - which is actually the county seat.  "Main Street" was all of one and a half blocks long and a narrow little lane.  We did make one circle around the courthouse and, yes Dad, the DAR had sent a canon for the courthouse square!  Eventually we actually found civilization.........in the form of a CVS.  It's all over from here on in - - CVS has discovered our little town.  And because of that, a stop light was deemed necessary.    If only it had been because of a Trader Joes....

How funny! We purchased land in a rural town last spring. There is no traffic light in the town - just one flashing caution light. It's a 30 minute drive into the nearest "town" and all it has to offer is 2 grocery stores, a CVS, and an Ace Hardware. It'll probably be years before we're able to move so it will be interesting to see how and if things change there.

Your husband just contacted me...it seems we're neighbors...sort of. I don't live at the Lake like half the county does. But rather, I live out where the cows are. LOL. I grew up coming down here from NJ to visit my grandparents. It was always a welcome cultural experience...visiting the "country" from the "city" and oftentimes "suburbs". My husband and I moved our family out here about four years ago and purchased my grandparents' farm. We love it. I'm not too thrilled about the drive into "town" myself, but thankfully my husband and I both work from home. I'm new to homeschooling this year and so far I'm enjoying it. I started blogging about it at http://www.homeschoolermom.com. The church I attend has an overwhelming amount of homeschooling families. That has been a real encouragement to me. I look forward to the opportunity to meet you sometime. Take care!

About Me

Just an accounting of life in our all-girls homeschool out here in Central Virginia. Written mostly for grandparents on the other side of the country - way out west in Colorado and California. Very Charlotte Mason in the way we study history and natural science. Grammar is also pretty important. Miss Annie Lee's influence carries on to the next generation!
