Mozambique Experience from Ashley
Okay so brief rundown of me in Mozambique.
We are staying right in the downtown area. You walk through an alley and at the end you see our doorman, who I absolutly adore, and then you climb about 6 flights of stairs and get to where I live. There is a balcony so close to the other buildings you could climb over. There is a kitchen a living room and 7 rooms. My room is little and I share it with the other girls but Nina Alexa and I are in the loft area where its an oven day and night. We bought a fan and try to stay cool while we sleep but it doesnt always help.
For dinner I use the downstairs kitchen where we try to cook and Im getting used to the rats running in and out. I even controlled myself as a rat ran right across the top of my bare feet. The smell of fish permeates everything. We eat a lot of rice and pasta which is becoming normal for us all.
Its always over 100 degrees here I really believe that. I find myself sweating at all times of the day no matter what Im doing. I can hear the rats running around on the roof at night their nails slidding across the metal roof and their little noises they make as they scurry through the walls. I wake up in the middle of the night screaming "I CAN HEAR THEM". So this just shows that I havent gotten used to them that much yet. The window in our room is always open and so in the morning, due to my lack of a mosqito net, I am covered from head to toe in bites.
Yesterday I laid in my bed with sweat dripping down my face and listened to the call of prayer they make everyday and just knew that this is where Im supposed to be. Despite the rats, my bites, the heat, the smells, the food, I know God has me here and I know he is using me here. I honestly am really happy that I get the chance to be here and get the chance to do what I do.
We have been evangelizing in a village for the last week and we have started a bible study that we hold twice a week plus a new church we are planting there in the village. This is what I have always wanted to do, not only lead people to Christ but to help them grow and make them disciples as well. I know Im a dork but Its really amazing and Im really excited about it!
I am really enjoying it here. There is so much that I can help with and do which is encouraging to me. Im getting ready to preach or I would like to call it "share" with a group of elders this saturday. Im really excited because the culture here doesnt allow for women to be in front of people like this. I immediatly knew I needed to do this and am so excited to share in front of these men about missions and why we are called, why I have come and why they should encourage others to go! Keep me in your prayers as I have little time to prepare but I know the Lord is going to use me and Im excited to tell you how it went!
The boys at the orphanage are getting used to us being there as we hold our bible studies there and they are all so much fun. Im falling in love with them all and enjoy teasing them and having fun. We will continue to work with them for the next 2 weeks that we are here.
2 more weeks! I know its crazy but keep me in your prayers as always also if you want to see my pictures try this link (below) and you can see where I was at in Swaziland as well as here in Mozambique.
One last note is please keep our team leader Khaya in your prayers as well as one of our team members Bernard. We are dealing with a serious issue with Bernard and Khaya has to make a decision on if he should go home. This puts a lot of stress on me as a team leader but so much more on Khaya. So all your prayers are so much appreciated!
I send all my love,
Ashley

Invitation from Hillsdale College
To Whom it May Concern:
Greetings from Hillsdale College! I obtained your e-mail address from your
website, and wish to invite you and your home schooling families to our fall
Admissions Receptions. If you are unfamiliar with our institution, allow me
to introduce to you Hillsdale College.
Founded in 1844, Hillsdale College is an independent, coeducational,
residential, liberal arts college with a student body of about 1,300. Its
four-year curriculum leads to the bachelor of arts or bachelor of science
degree, and it is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges
and Secondary Schools.
Hillsdale's educational mission rests upon two principles: academic
excellence and institutional independence. The College does not accept
federal or state taxpayer subsidies for any of its operations.
Located in rural southern Michigan, the nearly 200-acre Hillsdale campus
includes both modern and historic buildings. Excellent facilities include
comfortable residence halls, subject-specific computer labs, a
state-of-the- art health education and sports complex, Michael Alex Mossey
Library with its Leighton-Taylor Wing, the Sage Center for the Arts, the
Herbert Henry Dow Science Building, Howard Music Hall and two new classroom
buildings-Kendall Hall and Lane Hall. Adjacent to the campus is the model
primary and secondary school, Hillsdale Academy <
https://mail. hillsdale. edu/exchweb/ bin/redir. asp?URL=http: //www.hillsdale. edu/academy/ default.asp>
, whose comprehensive Reference Guide is used in hundreds of schools
throughout the country.
An ideal student-to-faculty ratio of 10-to-1, rigorous academics, intramural
sports, national fraternity and sorority houses and widespread community
volunteerism nurture intellectual, physical, social and personal growth. A
broad perspective is encouraged through opportunities for off-campus
internships, overseas study programs and the adjunct seminars of the Center
for Constructive Alternatives, Mises Lectures in free-market economics, the
National Leadership Seminars and the Hoogland Center for Teacher Excellence.
From the above, you can see that our students are blessed to receive an
excellent, classical education. Of interest to you and your participating
families will be the fact that we welcomes home schooled students to our
campus; about 13% of Hillsdale's students were home schooled.
If you know of any juniors or seniors who would be interested in learning

Survey and Interview on Homeschooling - TIME SENSITIVE
A young man named Brian Hickerson is doing a college paper for his last class at Southwestern College. He has asked, as you can see from the e-mails below, if he couldn't get some people to fill out the info requested in the two attachments. I'm sure one or the other would be greatly appreciated by Brian, if you are able to help him out.
Send answers/replies to brian.r.hickerson@us.army.mil.
Please note that though the surveys state he needs them back by the 15th, and that would be ideal, but he can still take them a few days late.
Thanks,
Jen Varberg
P.S. This does NOT have to be for just Michigan homeschoolers. Any state will do. Please tell Brian which state you are from.

Jen,
Bless your heart! I greatly appreciate your efforts to help me in this. I surveyed our homeschool group here in Valley Center, Kansas and got a small amount of responses and was trying to get input from other areas also. So, anything I can get will be awesome.
I've attached both the survey and interview questions. The interview questions so far have been the best data because it gives a personal feel and testimony to what parents go through in homeschooling. I don't have much more time to get this completed and I am asking for the responses be sent by the 15th of September, however, I can still add them early next week for the final draft of my research project. This is my last class for Southwestern College!!!! Yeah!!!!!
In His love,
Brian

September Mushroom Walk
|
A big thanks to Tricia O. for forwarding this great information!
Hello, all. The below Mushroom field trip is an amazingly beautiful adventure for the nature loving family. My children and I went last year, and it was a peaceful treat. There were baby deer and many other wild life creatures nearby observing us as we observe the mushrooms.
If you intent to bring home any specimens (only if picked to observe on the tour and non-poisenous) , bring a mesh bag to do it with. As you walk, it will spread spores in the woods to continue the mushroom's survival. It should be another beautiful mushroom year, as the rain just left us with a bounty.
SEPTEMBER MUSHROOM WALK (meet at the park):
September 16th (Sunday) 2:00 p.m. at Tenhave Woods (Lexington Blvd & Marias)- Mushroom Walk- A mushroom survey of the park will be lead again this year by Diane Pruden. There may also be a chance to sample some of the edible types that we find.
All Nature Walks and Speaker Programs are free and open to everyone. Pre-registration is not required.

Lifehouse 'Everything' Skit on GodTube.com
This is called GodTube...kinda like YouTube. It's awesomely powerful! I have dial-up and it took forever for it to play the first time (which I do with the volume turned off and doing something else, so it will run through the first time with glitches and such and the second time it's alright), but it's so worth the effort!! If you have high-speed, you should see it just fine the first time.
The video is kinda difficult to discern what is going on during the skit. It didn't impact me until I saw it more than once. For that reason, I will give you an outline of what you will see. Don't worry. It will still impact you! It's so awesome! I have showed it to my children and my husband, each separately and I have cried each time. If you know Jesus and what He has done for you, this will affect you. Guaranteed.
Outline:
Jesus/God comes out on stage and creates the girl. He is "wooing" her by showing her all the beautiful things he has made. The flowers, the tree with a yummy apple, the rain, a bird. He dances with her and loves on her. The purest love.
A man comes out and begins to woo her too. He shoves Jesus aside as he gently pulls the girl further from Christ with his romancing. He gives her a rose that he takes out of his mouth and puts in hers while dancing with her.
Another man comes along and "woos" her with money. She scrambles after it, getting further away from Christ.
A party girl/friend comes along and has a beer. She hangs on the girl, obviously wanting her to party with her. The girl is tempted.
A fashion diva comes along and tempts the girl with clothing and an obsession with her body. Of course, the girl proceeds to get even further from Christ.
A man in black comes along. He looks like death. He woos her too. The girl is in such distress that she takes the knife from him and he convinces her to cut her arm. She is so distraught but further from Jesus yet. She attempts to go back to Him, but death drags her away. Death hands her a gun. She holds it to her head and weeps.
The music gets louder now, the crowd cheers because the girl has chosen to throw down the gun and lunges in the direction of Christ. All the people pull her back. They keep pulling her back.....watch the video to see what happens next! You won't regret it.

COMPLIANCE DEMANDED . . .
MICHIGAN FIGHTS FOR
FREEDOM
Lapeer A large
watchdog group of Michigan citizens have organized an opportunity for education about
the N.A.I.S. (National Animal Identification System). The event will take place October 27th
6:30 pm. at the North Branch High School Auditorium. Guest speakers will include; Bruno Schmidt,
the author of the Farmers Field Guide to N.A.I.S., Dr. Ted Beals, M.D.,
retired pathologist and faculty member of U of M Medical School. He will be discussing Bovine T.B. in relation
to N.A.I.S., and Barbara Gallegly will speak on the N.A.I.S. and the effect it
will have on the organic food industry.
One person in the group said, This program
affects everyone, small farmers, 4H participants, horse owners, gardeners, pet
owners, consumers and anyone who likes to eat.
N.A.I.S. is an aggressive U.S.D.A. Program
bent on micro-chipping animals at an extremely high cost to taxpayers. Not only will it cost us an unbelievable
amount of money, it will also cost us many constitutional freedoms we have been
guaranteed by law.
Full compliance is expected. I didn't even know about N.A.I.S. Now I find out I will soon have to be in full compliance. You would think this kind of thing would be
all over the news but, it's not. one
local farmer lamented.
Your not exempt if you live in the
city. For owning even a pair of love
birds you will receive a number, be forced to chip the birds and information
about you and where you live will be entered into a government database. This issue affects every person in Michigan.
Invest a few short hours in the world our
children will inherit, join the citizens of Michigan to find out how you can
help keep Michigan free. Please call
Marilyn at 810-688-7018 or Diane at 810-395-8877 for more information.

Hotel Soap Mixup
|
This is long, but so funny....I cry every time I read it!!! Please take the time to tickle your funny bone.
Jen
Hotel Soap Mixup The following letters were taken from an actual incident during a homeschooling conference. This is an excerpt by Shelley Berman taken from a chapter in his book A Hotel Is A Funny Place, copyright ©1985. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dear Maid, Please do not leave any more of those little bars of soap in my bathroom since I have brought my own bath-sized Dial. Please remove the six unopened little bars from the shelf under the medicine chest and another three in the shower soap dish. They are in my way. Thank you, S. Berman ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dear Room 635, I am not your regular maid. She will be back tomorrow, Thursday, from her day off. I took the 3 hotel soaps out of the shower soap dish as you requested. The 6 bars on your shelf I took out of your way and put on top of your Kleenex dispenser in case you should change your mind. This leaves only the 3 bars I left today which my instructions from the management is to leave 3 soaps daily. I hope this is satisfactory. Kathy, Relief Maid ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dear Maid - I hope you are my regular maid. Apparently Kathy did not tell you about my note to her concerning the little bars of soap. When I got back to my room this evening I found you had added 3 little Camays to the shelf under my medicine cabinet. I am going to be here in the hotel for two weeks and have brought my own bath-size Dial so I won't need those 6 little Camays which are on the shelf. They are in my way when shaving, brushing teeth, etc. Please remove them. S. Berman ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dear Mr. Berman, My day off was last Wed. so the relief maid left 3 hotel soaps which we are instructed by the management. I took the 6 soaps which were in your way on the shelf and put them in the soap dish where your Dial was. I put the Dial in the medicine cabinet for your convenience. I didn't remove the 3 complimentary soaps which are always placed inside the medicine cabinet for all new check-ins and which you did not object to when you checked in last Monday. Please let me know if I can of further assistance. Your regular maid, Dotty ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dear Mr. Berman, The assistant manager, Mr. Kensedder, informed me this morning that you called him last evening and said you were unhappy with your maid service. I have assigned a new girl to your room. I hope you will accept my apologies for any past inconvenience. If you have any future complaints please contact me so I can give it my personal attention. Call extension 1108 between 8 AM and 5 PM.Thank you. Elaine Carmen Housekeeper ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dear Miss Carmen, It is impossible to contact you by phone since I leave the hotel for business at 7:45 AM and don't get back before 5:30 or 6 PM. That's the reason I called Mr. Kensedder last night. You were already off duty. I only asked Mr. Kensedder if he could do anything about those little bars of soap. The new maid you assigned me must have thought I was a new check-in today, since she left another 3 bars of hotel soap in my medicine cabinet along with her regular delivery of 3 bars on the bath-room shelf. In just 5 days here I have accumulated 24 little bars of soap. Why are you doing this to me? S. Berman ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dear Mr. Berman, Your maid, Kathy, has been instructed to stop delivering soap to your room and remove the extra soaps. If I can be of further assistance, please call extension 1108 between 8 AM and 5 PM.Thank you, Elaine Carmen, Housekeeper ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dear Mr. Kensedder, My bath-size Dial is missing. Every bar of soap was taken from my room including my own bath-size Dial. I came in late last night and had to call the bellhop to bring me 4 little Cashmere Bouquets. S. Berman ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dear Mr. Berman, I have informed our housekeeper, Elaine Carmen, of your soap problem. I cannot understand why there was no soap in your room since our maids are instructed to leave 3 bars of soap each time they service a room. The situation will be rectified immediately. Please accept my apologies for the inconvenience. Martin L. Kensedder Assistant Manager ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dear Mrs. Carmen, Who the hell left 54 little bars of Camay in my room? I came in last night and found 54 little bars of soap. I don't want 54 little bars of Camay. I want my one **** bar of bath-size Dial. Do you realize I have 54 bars of soap in here. All I want is my bath size Dial. Please give me back my bath-size Dial. S. Berman ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dear Mr. Berman, You complained of too much soap in your room so I had them removed. Then you complained to Mr. Kensedder that all your soap was missing so I personally returned them. The 24 Camays which had been taken and the 3 Camays you are supposed to receive daily. I don't know anything about the 4 Cashmere Bouquets. Obviously your maid, Kathy, did not know I had returned your soaps so she also brought 24 Camays plus the 3 daily Camays. I don't know where you got the idea this hotel issues bath-size Dial. I was able to locate some bath-size Ivory which I left in your room. Elaine Carmen Housekeeper ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dear Mrs. Carmen, Just a short note to bring you up-to-date on my latest soap inventory. As of today I possess: * On the shelf under medicine cabinet - 18 Camay in 4 stacks of 4 and 1 stack of 2. * On the Kleenex dispenser - 11 Camay in 2 stacks of 4 and 1 stack of 3. * On the bedroom dresser - 1 stack of 3 Cashmere Bouquet, * 1 stack of 4 hotel-size Ivory, and 8 Camay in 2 stacks of 4. * Inside the medicine cabinet - 14 Camay in 3 stacks of 4 and 1 stack of 2. * In the shower soap dish - 6 Camay, very moist. * On the northeast corner of tub - 1 Cashmere Bouquet, slightly used. * On the northwest corner of tub - 6 Camays in 2 stacks of 3. Please ask Kathy when she services my room to make sure the stacks are neatly piled and dusted. Also, please advise her that stacks of more than 4 have a tendency to tip. May I suggest that my bedroom window sill is not in use and will make an excellent spot for future soap deliveries. One more item, I have purchased another bar of bath-sized Dial which I am keeping in the hotel vault in order to avoid further misunderstandings. S. Berman ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ © 1972 and 1985 Shelley Berman

All I am
saying in this book can be summed up in two words: Trust Children. Nothing
could be more simple, or more difficult. Difficult because to trust children we
must first learn to trust ourselves, and most of us were taught as children
that we could not be trusted.

New Michigan Coordinator!!!
Hello there. I'm Jen Varberg, the new Michigan Coordinator, at your service! I look forward to providing a lot of important (and not-so-important) information for you that affects all of us homeschoolers and even some non-homeschoolers. A bit about me: My husband, David and I have two children. My eldest, Josh, was in public schools for 5 years including preschool before I pulled him out. (lots of de-schooling going on!) We are going on our fourth year. Kayla has always been homeschooled, though not by us since we just adopted her last September (2005). Needless to say, we have had a very hectic couple of years getting used to each other! My passions are for learning, reading, all sorts of crafting (the more 'back to basics', the better), homesteading, writing, knitting, crocheting, reading, cross stitching, growing in Christ, creating websites, researching, did I say reading?...the list goes on. Speaking of websites, which is my newest passion, I have worked on four of them, though there are two sites that I created that I currently manage as well. One is a my homeschool co-op site and the other is for my church. www.gracehomeschool.com www.cornerstone-christian-church.com I have a couple more that will be created in the near future. One is for a new homeschool group in Michigan that is geared toward helping the new homeschooling family. I am also the Michigan contact person for the Dick DeVos campaign for homeschoolers. He and his wife were a homeschooling family and his passion is protecting us from too much government involvement. I will post more information in the future about that. On another note, we are looking for contributors for the Michigan blog. If you would like to contribute information about what is going on in your area of the state, please contact me at admin@gracehomeschool.com and I will be happy to add your information to this blog! Keep checking back for more information, tell all of your friends about us and send in your own group's information! I look forward to "meeting" you! Thanks!! Jen V
