My Little Budding Poetess

Posted in Literary Lane

My little girl has always liked writing verses, but the past few months or so have seen her more prolific. This was what she wrote for me two nights ago.

My Dream Room  - To My Mommy

My dream room has come true

All but the balcony, but that doesn’t matter

Because I finally, at last, have a room

Where I have a bed, a desk and a book about making batter.

It’s so nice, so nice, I say,

I could just live in it

The whole, long day.

I like my room,

You’ll like it too

Once you see the colors – pink and blue.

Background

I had not allowed her to have too many books or toys in the room as I didn’t’ like it cluttered. Besides, with her allergies, I don’t care for the mites lurking in her soft toys. The last time she wanted to have stuff in her room I didn’t relent, and I felt so bad about it later on. That was not a battle worth fighting. I guess I also didn’t care for her doing that because she had just visited a friend and the friend had everything in his room.  I didn’t care for her to be discontent because of that comparison.  She was pretty tearful and I felt like a mean old bear. Well, when she brought the idea up again today, I wondered why I had made a fuss about it half a year ago. I’m glad I felt excited with her. She was so pleased. That little poem surely is my “reward” for being more understanding…

About the Poem

She dreams of having a balcony outside her bedroom. Maybe we will one day when we build our own house (still a dream for us; but not impossible as the land is waiting). I wondered about the “book about making batter” and she said that was the little cookie recipe book she had on the dresser. That was a cute way of describing her cookie recipe book, I thought. I guess she needed something to rhyme with “matter”.
