I was on the phone yesterday when I overhead my daughter and little Josh talking and giggling. Apparently, Josh was singing a cute little song and my daughter was transcribing what he was singing.
After I put down the phone, my daughter pushed a paper under my nose. She had penned the “song” on it.
Oh, the song was so cute. I will put that down as the first poetic collaboration between the two.
Bunnies
One bunny's singing, One bunny's hopping, There is glitter on them! There's a BUNNY in my sock! There's a bunny covered with GLITTER in my sock! Glitter and a bunny in my sock!
sung by Joshua Gibson (3) 10-2-06

I thought I’d share something my daughter wrote just now when we were playing a game. I was supposed to contribute a poem to her imaginary anthology of poems (with contributions from her imaginary friends). She had paper and pen, and asked me to dictate something. I gave a title and spouted two lines. Then I stopped to let her finish writing out what I had said. That done, she looked up at me, gave me a little excited smile and said, “Okay, you can go now. I think I can finish the poem for you. You can come back later.” I was glad actually to return to the kitchen to continue preparing dinner. A few minutes later, she rang a bell (part of her game) and said she was done. She had a little note attached to her poem. “Each line 10 cents. Your poem has 8 lines and costs 80 cents.” This was how she continued the two lines. One Winter Night The night was cold The wind did blow I saw some owls A long time ago. There were five Going, “Hoo, hoo hoo.” But I said to the owls, “Boo, owls, boo!” I read it and laughed. Then I showed it to my husband and we had a good laugh. That was so like her. She loves nature, and owls and bunnies top her list. I love spontaneous things like that. We also haven’t been doing any formal math (ha, I’m delaying formal math till she’s 10), so I was also glad she knew her math. |

I’m including two more of my soon-to-be-8 year old daughter’s poems. The first poem was written last week (11-22) just before our house-guest arrived. She titled it “Hummingbirds”. She was literally touched by a hummingbird for the first time some months back (it flew right into her and touched her fingers!) – an indelible encounter! A few days before she wrote this poem, her daddy bought her a hummingbird stamp and she decided she wanted to write a little poem on hummingbirds and to use the stamp to decorate her little poem. I thought it was pretty neat for a little girl.
Hummingbirds Hummingbirds are cute, Hummingbirds are nice. You know what? I can say that twice! A hummingbird touched me! I touched him! And you know what? He was light as a pin!
I really like the next poem entitled "What Happens In Fall" which I had included in the November issue of her monthly newsletter, “The Honeycomb”. This newsletter has subscribers from What Happens in Fall Fall is a time of crisp cool air, And little fall flowers everywhere. The leaves are falling, The birds are flying too, Right beneath a sky of blue. Squirrels are scurrying, getting food. Just like us getting winter wood. Bears are getting in their dens, Ready for the chilliness That winter sends. By Michiko Gibson (10-26-05)

My little girl has always liked writing verses, but the past few months or so have seen her more prolific. This was what she wrote for me two nights ago. My Dream Room - To My Mommy My dream room has come true All but the balcony, but that doesn’t matter Because I finally, at last, have a room Where I have a bed, a desk and a book about making batter. It’s so nice, so nice, I say, I could just live in it The whole, long day. I like my room, You’ll like it too Once you see the colors – pink and blue. Background I had not allowed her to have too many books or toys in the room as I didn’t’ like it cluttered. Besides, with her allergies, I don’t care for the mites lurking in her soft toys. The last time she wanted to have stuff in her room I didn’t relent, and I felt so bad about it later on. That was not a battle worth fighting. I guess I also didn’t care for her doing that because she had just visited a friend and the friend had everything in his room. I didn’t care for her to be discontent because of that comparison. She was pretty tearful and I felt like a mean old bear. Well, when she brought the idea up again today, I wondered why I had made a fuss about it half a year ago. I’m glad I felt excited with her. She was so pleased. That little poem surely is my “reward” for being more understanding… About the Poem She dreams of having a balcony outside her bedroom. Maybe we will one day when we build our own house (still a dream for us; but not impossible as the land is waiting). I wondered about the “book about making batter” and she said that was the little cookie recipe book she had on the dresser. That was a cute way of describing her cookie recipe book, I thought. I guess she needed something to rhyme with “matter”.
