• Oct. 21, 2005 - Homeschooling: the right choice or simply exercising the right to choose?

Posted in Web Polls

There are a lot of reasons homeschooling parents begin to do so.  This week I was chatting with a dear friend of mine and we discussed that God calls some people to homeschool and other not to homeschool.  We also mentioned that sometimes we homeschool only for a season and then our children move into the public school system to be a light.  SO, in light of these truths, I ask you to contemplate the question my title solicits.  Homeschooling: is it the right choice for your family or simply you exercising the right to choose?

I have known some die-hard homeschoolers who claim it is the only way, and then there are the homeschoolers who have claimed this responsibility, but then felt that perhaps God didn't actually call them to it in the first place.  Sometimes we do things simply because they are the "Christian" thing to do or the "popular" thing to do or even the "right" thing to do, without ever having received conviction regarding them.  This question is an opportunity to be sure that all of our decisions...even the "right" ones are right for the right reason.

So, I have added another quiz to the sidebar under the Halloween poll and would love it if you all would participate and share what initiated your journey on the road to homeschooling.  If you choose to post your own comment, please do so here.

• Oct. 24, 2005 - How do I look in these jeans?

I wonder how the conversation would go if we and our husbands sat down together for a chat about homeschooling. I completely agree with you that it isn't our job to make the "right" decision if we're not doing it for the right reasons. In one of her women's devotionals, Elizabeth George writes,

"Good, better, best. Never let it rest,
until your good is better, and your better best."

Sometimes what is right for one person is wrong for someone else. God created us all unique. We don't all fit into a size six. For example, a pair of jeans may fit you, but not me. No matter how hard I try to make them fit, they won't. At least not the way they should. Either they're too big or too small. I may be able to pull it off (or on, as the case may be), but they will never look quite right.

Of course this does not apply to everything. Sin is sin. It doesn't fit well on anyone, if you know what I mean. ;-)

• Oct. 24, 2005 - Bella Dancerella said that!

That quote is funny because our girls love this video called Bella Dancerella. It is a learn ballet video from England. Anyway, they say the quote you mentioned in the video several times. Too bad they didn't quote the source somehow!

I am not sure that Elizabeth George is the one who came up with that quote. I think she was merely referencing it in her book, but I will look into it and see what I find.

• Oct. 26, 2005 - I homeschool because

Posted by lotsapets
Thinking wayyyy back, my oldest is 11 now and we decided to HS when he was 4....I remember feeling very worried that he would not be able to cope with preschool or kindergarten. He would get overly upset when we tried to leave him even for a short time with a friend or in a class. Later we found out that he has aspergers syndrome. When I learned more about homeschooling I knew that it was the right choice for our family, special needs and typical kids alike! I totally love this lifestyle but accept that it's not for everyone.

We want to have the greatest influence on our children during these years . . . not their peers.

Do any public school parents send their kids to school to "socialize?"

About Me

Having just embarked on the homeschooling adventure this year, I have quickly come to realize that I am nothing more than my weblog title implies: a student with unlimited chalkboard privileges. I love the learning process and am so blessed to be given the opportunity to serve my children through homeschooling.

What Do You Think?

I began homeschooling because:
the school system is overcrowded, underpaid, and therefore ineffective for my child.
God told me to.
my child did not want to go to school as a result of social issues.
my child has special needs and the school system did not have adequate programs in place to address them.
