• Nov. 9, 2005 - Backup first...story time second...
So, I was on Shayla's site earlier
posting "The Ocean",a poem on her sidebar that she wrote and
read. In doing so, I neglected to logout of my own session and
somehow ended up crossing our browsers so that all of her template was
transferred to my entries. Talk about a heart attack when I
loaded my site later to find that my whole sidebar circus collection
was missing...vanished...demolished! I was relieved that I had
made a backup of my template a couple weeks ago, but I had added other
new features since then that I had to rewrite into the template
today. I cannot encourage you all enough to BACKUP your template
often if you overhaul or personalize it. I would have died (well,
not really but you caught me in rare moment of extreme drama!) if I had
to write all my audio files back into the code again. So, if you
have not backed up your template and you are currently thinking, "I am
glad that hasn't happened to me!", then insure your efforts now and
just cut and paste into a notepad doc and place on your desktop...easy
as pie!
However, amidst all my template tweeking, and adding the poem to
Shayla's website, I thought about how great it would be to add a Story
Time feature to the sidebar. So, I will gradually be recording my
favorite books and breaking them down by chapter for you to listen to
as you browse. I am considering placing them in their own web
browser like the Audio Library feature because then you can leave my
homepage but still have the story playing on the "pop-up page".
Any thoughts? I have both options posted currently...with the
player directly on the sidebar and also with the link to the player
below it so you can decide which you prefer. The books that I
will record reside in the public domain, meaning that they can be
legally distributed, but not sold for profit. You can find a HUGE
selection of these book titles as well as their pages and some audio
format books at Project Gutenberg. What a great resource! So, pull up your favorite cuddly blanket and a cup of cocoa, snuggle with the kids and enjoy our current reading project "Anne of Green Gables".
