• Nov. 14, 2005 - Math=Woe: an equation for the right-brainers

Math has never been a favorite subject of mine and it happens that it is not one of my daughter's greatest enjoyments either.  However, I fear that a lot of that has to do with my own frustration with the subject.  Now, don't get me wrong, I didn't have any woes with math until about algebra in eighth grade and then I really didn't grasp the formula memorization/implementation that made it all work.  That led to further struggles through Physics my graduating year.  I mean, because I was so hard on myself I tried very, very hard to always do my best.  Actually, I think I tried so hard that I often did better than I gave myself the credit of capability but it was SO hard and required a lot of discipline.

So, I have been trying to discern whether math is a subject God would have me...let's say...outsource.  I am ready to throw my hands up and have her tutored or attend a school for that subject...and band and choir when she is old enough.  However, I believe my main reason for these insecurities is that I don't want Shayla to be a math-a-phobe when she grows up.  Has anyone faced this trial with their own children and did you happen to find some really "fun" ways to teach such a subject...for those of us who claim a rightie kind of brain?

• Nov. 16, 2005 - We found a good math program even mom likes!

Posted by
Hi! Your husband posted to my site, so I thought I would check out yours! We have five kids, and right now I am homeschooling my son and "informally" homeschooling my youngest. I wanted my son to really understand math. We tried Horizons in Kindergarten, then switched to Saxon last year, then at the end of the year went to Singapore. Singapore went great, as the other two were just too drab or boring, but then I heard there was not enough review. I met a fellow homeschooler who swore by Math U See. I reasearched it and ended up deciding to go with it this year. It has been the best things we could have done. He likes it! Some days he loves it! The blocks give us math mentality challenged moms the means to teach the concept! There is also a DVD that has all of the lessons on it to pop in to review if you are having trouble with a concept or teaching it. My son is skip counting, which really is memorizing the multiplication facts. This is the first year I feel we accomplish math, just don't do it. It would be great to hear from you. I just posted some pictures of my kids on my site, so stop by. What are you using for your other subjects? Oh, and tell your husband our homestudy is for adoption! I didn't clarify it enough in my post.

About Me

Having just embarked on the homeschooling adventure this year, I have quickly come to realize that I am nothing more than my weblog title implies: a student with unlimited chalkboard privileges. I love the learning process and am so blessed to be given the opportunity to serve my children through homeschooling.

What Do You Think?

I began homeschooling because:
the school system is overcrowded, underpaid, and therefore ineffective for my child.
God told me to.
my child did not want to go to school as a result of social issues.
my child has special needs and the school system did not have adequate programs in place to address them.
