The title of Edie Carey's third studio release, "When I Was Made," is a
helpful key when listening to this lush and intimate new collection of
songs. Creation is a theme that reappears throughout the album, most
notably in the rolling, mesmerizing "Chemistry," inspired by Shelley's
Frankenstein, and in "If I Start to Cry," in which Carey asks some of
the hardest questions a child can ask of a father: I'm just like my
mother / And if you don't love her / What does that mean about me? But
the album title also seems to point to her own re-making of herself as
an artist. From the first vibrant moments of "With Our Hands," it is
clear that Carey has taken a mindful step in a rather different musical
direction. This is by far her most countrified recording to date, with
its liberal sprinklings of banjo, pedal and lap steel, and dobro
throughout. Yet, it's not so much the instrumentation that's changed,
but her tone. There is an almost palpable maturity and depth in her
voice that can only come from three years of rigorous touring and
simply growing up. She sounds so at home on this record, so laid back,
and yet fierce at the same time. Carey is more confident than ever, and
she is not afraid to take her sweet time carving out her stories right
before your eyes.

Sep. 26, 2005 - Eva Cassidy

You can find clips of most of Eva Cassidy's songs, including the "Now Playing..." feature at: http://www.synuk.com/eva/
Eva Cassidy was born 2 February 1963. Growing up in a musical family on the outskirts of Washington, DC,
she sang as a small child and later learned to play the guitar. Even
then as a child she had an amazing gift for perfect harmony, and on
family outings, she would sing, harmonising perfectly with the music
from the car radio. Her father, a teacher of children with learning
disabilities and a part-time musician, formed a family band with Eva,
her brother Danny, on violin, and himself on bass. She endured school,
preferring her own company and, whenever possible, being involved with
music and painting.
Eva's
singing voice was a crystalline soprano, ideal for the ballads and folk
sons she performed. But she also had tremendous power and when
she turned to sould and gospel-flavoured material her voice resounded
with emotional sincerity. Her repertoire drew from all these
areas and from the more melodic aspects of contemporary pop.
While she might be placed only on the edges of jazz her conviction and
integrity would often ably carry her over the hazy boundary. The
excellent interpretation of Sting's "Fields of Gold", on "Live at Blues
Alley" and (minus the applause) on the compliation album 'Songbird', is
breathtaking in clarity and delivery, and of course her now famous
interpretation of "Over The Rainbow".
Eva died as a result of melanoma in November of 1996 at the age of 33, but her angelic music continues on.

Sep. 20, 2005 - Jeremy Kittel

http://jeremykittel.com/
You can find the previous "Now Playing..." featured song at: http://audio.cdbaby.com/mp3lofi/k/i/kittel1-05.mp3
Kittel
energetically explores his many musical influences, from traditional
Scottish and Irish styles to jazz and classical music. He moves from
original Celtic compositions to Irish-tinged jazz, newgrass and
triple-fiddle harmonies, with startling improvisations and plenty of
traditional Scottish and Irish tunes.
Jeremy grew up in Ann
Arbor and Saline, Michigan, and started playing the violin at five, as
did his older brother and younger sister. It was just one of many
activities and sports the children were encouraged to try over the
years, but Jeremy liked it almost from the start. Although his lessons
focused on classical violin, his mother's love of folk music led Jeremy
to begin learning fiddle tunes at 8. Her family is of Scottish descent,
and by 12 Jeremy was competing nationally in Scottish Fiddling. He won
the US National Scottish Fiddle Junior Championships in 1998 and 1999,
and competed in the adult division at 16, winning the US National
Scottish Fiddle Championship. During these years Jeremy was also
learning traditional Irish fiddle styles, winning US regional
competitions, and traveling to Ireland to study and compete in Irish
fiddling. In 2000 he entered the jazz program at the University of
Michigan, and graduated with highest honors at 20. Jeremy is now 21 and
a graduate student at the Manhattan School of Music.
