If that doesn't encourage you about the upcoming generation, I don't know what will.
Amy: Just had to give you a shout and say hello! How are you doing without Miss Willow? Is she much of a writer? It seems so weird that we can only send them mail in Brazil for another week and a half. 31 days to go, friend!
Bobbie: Thanks so so much for posting our need on your blog! It was such a blessing. I do think they've got a truly great team, and God has really given me the word that He Who began the good work in Bo (last summer) will be faithful to complete it (this summer!) Not that he'll be COMPLETE this summer (boy, wouldn't that be nice?) but more that the Teen Missions *thing* will be completed in him, you know? I'm excited. Thanks again for your encouragement.
Woody: Hello! I do remember you from Family Camp. I so enjoyed reading the newspaper article about James! We did it so quickly this summer, there was no time for any interviews, LOL! He really does love it in Brazil. I'm hoping he decides to come home! I think it's great that James really has a heart for missions, too. God is going to really use them mightily. Hope all is well with you and your family!
StonyHillHomeschool: Thanks for saying hello! I'm so glad you enjoyed the conference. Cindy is a hoot, isn't she? She definitely makes you feel *able* to homeschool, and reminds you that it's all about God. Hope to see you at a conference online sometime; this weekend I was at our local homeschool convention and so I'm getting the mp3s online later!
Whew. We had a great weekend; I learned SO MUCH at the convention and really enjoyed being on the veterans panel answering questions for new homeschoolers, even though there were only a few question-ers! It actually seemed to me that there were way fewer people there in general this year, but that might just be my impression. Once again I find my brain full of information that I'd love to pour out here, but I've already been online quite awhile this morning typing all this, and that's something I *don't* want to do, so it will have to wait til later. The one piece of big news from my weekend is that I spoke with the leaders of our local Classical Conversations group and decided not only to join, but was asked if I'd like to tutor one of the classes! I decided to pray about it and talk to Rob, expecting he'd probably say no as he usually does because he worries that I'm too busy already, but then when I sat down with the paperwork at lunchtime I got teary just reading the information--really feeling like it might be what God wanted for us this year. Then when I reached Rob on the phone later that night, he totally surprised me by saying he thought I should do it! So I filled out all the paperwork and we're in. I think it's going to be a great year.
You can read more about it at www.classicalconversations.com . It's basically a tutored co-op for students K4-12th grade where the focus is on the classical method of education. The students come together once a week to go over their memory work in history, English, science, Latin, grammar, American History (this year), geography, and math. They also have a fine arts lesson and a science experiment as well as time to make a presentation on a given topic each week. I think it's going to be great! If you're looking for something to get involved in with your kids that is *very* organized and maybe give you the kick-in-the-pants you need to really DO the classical method with them, check it out! CC is in almost every state now, so there may be a group near you! One thing I really love about it is that the tutors are not there to supplant you as the teacher--we get trained to train the parents! In class, one parent is required to be with the child so they're there to learn how to do the drills with their children at home that week themselves! If you have more than one child you can float between classes, and since they're all memorizing the same things (history timeline, multiplication tables, conjugation of Latin verbs, etc.) anyway, you won't go crazy trying to remember what everyone's supposed to be doing. They say to plan on it only taking about 20 minutes each day to go over the memory work with the kids, and then you can use their materials as a "spine" for the rest of your homeschool if you want, or just add it on to whatever else you're doing. Isn't that neat? So CC is designed to be a networking social and educational training spot for moms, too. I'm really excited about it, in case you can't tell.
Here's a real commercial, if you want to learn more!
