Quick--can you name all 50 states? Good, good . . . now, can you tell me where all of them are??? If you're like me, that's not as easy! We moved right in the middle of 5th grade, and I always have sworn that we were just heading into United States Geography in one school and they'd just left it in the other . . . meaning that I missed it. I know where the states I've lived in or visited are, and since I grew up in the middle, that's pretty simple, but forget anything in the Northwest for sure! This darling little book is about a classroom of children challenged to learn the locations of the fifty states. When their wise teacher challenges them to check out a United States puzzle to work on their knowledge, they notice that there appears to be a little man in their map!
This full-color, hardcover, whimsical book by E. Andrew Martonyi incorporates a cute story and easy-to-remember images to help your child memorize the locations of all 50 states. I took the book into a co-op class of 6-8 year olds and they all loved it, as did my own 4, 6, 9 and 11 year olds! It's even helped me remember where to find Wisconsin, and that's quite a feat! I don't want to give away any secrets, so you'll have to see the website to find our where the Little Man in the Map actually lives. MIM, as he's nicknamed, does use some magic and there are a couple of elves in the book, I believe, so if that bothers you, you can pass this by *or* do as I do--just skim over it; it's not a focal point of the book. My kids loved it so much that now, whenever I take out our U.S. map, someone is sure to say, "Hey, there's MIM!" You can read more about The Little Man in the Map at http://www.schoolsidepress.com/index.cfm The book costs $19.95, and would actually be a great gift. You can even have the author write an inscription on the book if you order it at the website! Anything that makes geography painless is a gift, in my book. 8:08 PM - Dec. 16, 2008 - post comment

She has been clinging ferociously to the hand of her Lord since she was knee-high to a grasshopper, homeschooling for the past thirteen years, and has eighteen more years ahead of her with the children who are glad she will have done most of her experimenting on those who went before. Her wonderful husband Rob has much treasure laid up for him in heaven for having been called to such a daunting task.
