Self Initiative

I just love that the boys take initiative to learn on their own.  Even thought they are enjoying their break from school work, they have chosen to get a headstart on a few subjects.  When J found out that he would be studying about Lewis and Clark for biography this year he went to the library and checked out the Ken Burns documentary "Lewis and Clark."  The boys have been watching the videos while playing or during quiet time before bed.

I really enjoy listening to their discussions regarding some of the events and people met along the way.  They haven't broken out the map yet, but I'm sure they will at some time, because that is something they have done in the past.

Another subject they are getting a head start in is handicrafts.  On Saturday we stopped by Michael's on the way home from the fellowship at the church in McKinleyville.  There weren't any Christmas ornament kits available yet, so the boys chose from the available beginner kits.  D chose a dolphin which is stamped on white sail cloth with glow in the dark ink.  J chose a lighthouse scene which is simple, but nice.  They have been asking to work on them everyday.  On Saturday, I was too tired after a full day and today I didn't have enough time to work with them between shifts.

I love that we can place opportunities in front of the boys and they will enthusiastically embrace them.
