My Baby Is Becoming A Man

A week and half ago I realized my baby is becoming a man.  When the boys had finished swimming, J came out to wait with me.  His hair was sticking straight up (just like when he was born).  I reached up and started to smooth it down.  He crossed his arms, wrinkled his nose, and said, "Mom." in that tone which indicates he's embarrassed.
Lately he has been taking on manly chores and responsiblities.  He loaded the groceries into the trunk of the car this Tuesday with minimal assistance from me, closed the hood, and returned the cart.  I just looked at him with surprise and said, "Well, I guess I'll just sit in the car and let you do your thing."  His response was, "Sounds good to me."
We've been working on building a greenhouse this week.  He has been a huge help.  He has screwed pieces together and helped with some of the harder assembly.  He's been amazing and quite helpful.
This morning he woke up and did his chores without prompting.  His dad even commented on his mature ways and was quite pleased.
He has done things to show that the little boy is still hiding inside.  He had a lot of fun with the suction at the dentist during his fluoride treatment.  He had that mischievous sparkle in his eyes.  He  takes joy in playing with the older boys.  He's been playing football and Ultimate with the junior high aged boys after cross country practice. He still plays with his brother.  Lately they have been into sword and cudgel fighting.  I have to watch them because they have given each other some pretty good bruises.
It's amazing how fast they grow up.  It seems like only yesterday that he was a baby in my arms.  Now he's 10 1/2 years old and turning into quite a not so little man.
