The School Room

August 28, 2008 - New School Year

Yesterday the Monkey and I met with her advisor at the middle school. Monkey will be taking 5 classes a week there. One a day.

Mondays- Forensics
Tuesdays- Chorus
Wednesday-English (an extension to her course at home)
Thursday- Technical Drama
Friday- Math (an extension to her course at home)

She is pretty excited with most of her classes. She isn't too happy with the math but I figure it can't hurt her. Each class is 1 1/2 hours long. Thses classes start on the 4th for her. Her regular homeschool classes start on Monday.

August 12, 2008 - Upcoming Trip to Philidelphia

We are planning a trip to Philidelphia... We are planning on going in October... It should be neat.. We are planning on seeing the following locatations:

Edger Allen Poe's House
Liberty Bell
Independence Hall
Jewish History Museum
Benjamin Franklin's Grave
Betsy Ross' House and Grave
The 1st Bank in the US
Tomb of the Unknown Soldier
Todd House
Constitution Center

Any one have any suggestions for a place to get a great Philly Cheesesteak????

School officailly starts for us on the 1st of September. I am hoping to have the Monkey's laptop back by then so she can use hers (it started burning from the webcam and burnt the case. So thankfully, it was still under warrenty and we sent it right out to Texas.) We are still waiting to hear from the middle school about the chorus class and the forensics class that she wants to take.

July 31, 2008 -

We didn't do much schooling this month. Michaela had a cousin come down for three weeks and they spent 24/7 with each other. She just left this past Sunday.

This week Michaela has been attending Vacation Bible School at a church that we attended with a friend of ours. She has come home all week tellling me what they did while they were there.

Starting on Monday she will need to finish up the last of this years work so she can go to the next year.

We will also be getting a lesson on the facts of life. Our cat was in heat and got out of the house... Needless to say she wasn't in heat when she came back... Michaela informed me that a cat is pregnant for 64 days. So mid September we should have a litter of kittens... I really hope she gets to watch the birth of them as I think birth is such a special thing.

Here is an email that I received. I wanted to share it with those who read my blog. I personally own this game... It is so cute... I love it... My daughter loves it... Here is the blog I posted when I bought the game.
The properties are real companies... I have actually done business with some of these companies. I use Rainbow Resource Center every year.. Never a problem. The Young Scientists Club is great too...

If any of you do purchase this game, leave me a comment and let me know what you think!

June 3, 2008 - Science Day

Today we did a kit on Weight and Volume... We couldn't get the homemade spring scale to work right.... So we weren't able to do that part... But the volume part was pretty fun..... The Monkey will be blogging about it on her blog....

Supplies for the kit:

Scientist Monkey measuring

Checking the measurement

Writing her theory down

May 27, 2008 - Next school years work

Alpha Omega SOS

This is our curriculum for next school year. We are pretty excited about using this one. The Monkey likes the student area for it... She has picked her background and can't wait to start it... I like it because it does all the grading and will print a report card so I have the required documentation for the school department.

I am thinking of getting a couple of window boxes so we can grow some herbs for the kitchen and maybe strawberries or peppers.. I don't seem to have much luck with starting them from seeds so I am thinking of getting plants this time..

May 27, 2008 - Don't know why I bother

trying to argue with the Monkey about anything animal related....

The other day she broke yet another pair of glasses (the second time she broke this pair). Someone had asked how she can see with out them... I said that she was blind as a bat.. She told me that she takes that as a compliment since bats are not blind and they have very good eyesight.... I kept insisting that she was wrong and that bats are blind and they use sonar to get around. She kept saying that bats had great eyesight........

Go figure, I was wrong.......

May 15, 2008 - New idea

I set up a homeschool blogger account for the Monkey.  The Monkey Princess' Place . I thought this would be a good idea for a journal for her.

May 13, 2008 - Grades for the year so far

We are almost through with the school year 2007-2008. We have three units left until the end. So far the grades are as follows:

Bible- 87%  B
History-89% B
LA- 87% B
Math- 89% B (mind you all this is the subject the Monkey HATES)
Science- 89% B

I follow the grading scale of the Life Pacs
100-94 A
93-86 B
85-77 C
76-70 D
69-0 F

There have been some funny quotes from the Monkey this year...

When asked "What can you tell me about the Revolution?" She responded "Well, we won and they are all dead now." Then she laughed..
When asked "What are you learning about the Great Depression?" The repsonse was "It was a depressing time." another giggle...

However, she seems to be really into the history of the US from the 20's to now... She really gets lost in it....

She is currently reading "The Devil's Arithmetic" By Jane Yolen.  I recently listened to this book (I listened while I was walking.) and thought it was a great book. I saw the movie after (definately not half as good as the book) and thought that since Monkey is getting into this period of time it would be a great book for her.. She is almost finished with it.  (I wonder if she will have the same intense interest in this period of time that I have... I am drawn to the time of the holocaust.. I must have read the Diary of Ann Frank about a million times and seen the movie about as many-read the book many times before seeing the movie though..)

April 17, 2008 -

I have talked with the principle of the school.... I am pretty frustrated.. She is trying to talk me into allowing Monkey to be enrolled into the public school full time.... She feels that the students this age need to be in public school for socialization

glitter-graphics.com (she has been a principal for 20 years and she knows what the children need) So now I am wondering about allowing her to go for the one class... I know that she wants to... I did find out that there is more than one option for her. She can chose Chorus, Band, Drama, Painting (which includes Japanese Anime), Martial Arts and there are others but the priciple doesn't have the list ready.... I did find out that the classes are 90 minutes long a day and at various times during the week... Sometimes in the morning and some times in the afternoon... Oh yeah, and the principle told me that she has is the one who eventually will decide whether my child will be able to go to high school or not... (um... guess I should have told her she didn't need to worry.. My child will be homeschooled through high school).

The Monkey really wants to take Chorus... She is always singing and loves it so much... I think she would do well in the drama class

April 11, 2008 - Just thinking

When it comes to homeschool I don't procrastinate. I make sure I send in my notice and meet with the principal and all the things I need to do. I usually have the following years curriculum bought and sitting on a shelf in February... Today, I was getting ready to email the pricipal my letter of intent and BAM! I was slapped with the realization that my daughter would be in the middle school (if she attended public school). So different school, different principal. This year we are hoping that she can attend chorus... She really likes singing... I have different thoughts on this though... Do I really want her to associate with these children? Do I want her under the eye of some public school teacher and his/her thoughts and ideas??? I am going back and forth on this... Plus, should I let her walk to the school alone or should I walk with her? Now mind you the school is only three blocks away... BUT the school is right directly across the street from the Probate Court (brilliant idea someone had for that set up!) I mean the front doors to both buildings are facing each other!

March 23, 2008 - Week off

We took a week off due to a very very close family friend visiting from CA. It was a fun time by all... Monkey and my friend (I consider her my sister) talked about animals almost the whole week. Monkey loved it (of course!)

This week we will be back on our studying track....

I hope everyone has a wonderful Easter...

Here are a few pictures of our trip to Lizzie Borden's house...

This is the exact spot that Mrs. Abby Borden was murdered at...

This is a replica of the couch the Mr. Andrew Borden was murdered on. This couch stands in the same spot as the original couch where Mr. Borden met his fate.

March 12, 2008 - WOW A long time has passed since I was here.

Well, the 5th grade is almost over for the monkey... We did go with all Alpha Omega Life Pacs for the year. She is still not enjoying math but is getting better.. It is funny that she doesn't enjoy it because it is her best subject so far..

I will make an effort to get here on a regular basis. I will try to post some more pictures....

Things that were accomplished this year:

Monkey sewed me a Bible Cover
Science kits from the Young Scientist Club were a big hit with us....
Monkey make reindeer cupcakes for CHRISTmas.... They were cute and pretty good also!

June 19, 2007 - WOW

Just realized it has been FOREVER since I have posted anything about school.... Sorry!!!

We completed the work for the 4th grade and started right in with the 5th grade... We are using Life Pacs for each subject now (last year we did Life Pacs just for math) and they seem pretty fun.

Right now as I sit and type this update the Monkey is in the kitchen experimenting... She is making soda... She found a book in the library about soda science and it had some recipes for soda.. Let's just say the first one was not that great... Even she didn't like it... I will be posting some pictures this week of the Volcano the Monkey made. Right now it is in the just finished paper machie  stage. I have a couple of cute pictures where she is working on the stuff for the lava... I will try to post them later.

March 30, 2007 - This week

Today's Latin Quiz

According to our records the grade for Latin this year is as follows:
Worksheets: 89%  (B+)
Quizzes: 96% (A)
Tests: 93% (A-)

For a year total of 93% (A-) Monkey likes letter grades for some reason...

The monkey finished up reading The Bridge to Terabithia. She seemed to really like it.. She was supposed to write a little summary on it but ended up writing a 3 page report... Guess she really liked it since she does not like writing reports...

Later on today she will be doing some art.. Sand Art.. She has been waiting to do this project... I will post pictures...

A little crossword.

Some pictures of the monkey sewing. We are hoping to start the project on Monday. She will be making a pillow case...

We are also doing a literary study on Bridge to Terabithia.  Monkey wants to see the movie but I wanted her to read the book first.. It is great. She read the book the week we were on vacation (Valentine week). Now she is reading it for school. I will post some of the work from this as we go along..

We received our new mini greenhouse.. So hopefully our plants will grow this year.. Last year we planted and had some nice little seedlings. We replanted them out side and the day after we started getting a ton of rain.. So those little seedlings got too much watering....

We are doing some St. Patricks lessons the next two weeks along with some crafts so keep posted for pictures.

The History teacher had made a game up and I only remember one question... Tomorrow will be the 48th year Anniversary of the Day the Music Died. The day these three great musician died in a plane crash not far from the air field they took off from in Clear Lake Iowa.

January 29, 2007 - Today's math

Here are some worksheets that I made for the monkey to work on today. Not too much school work for today since the monkey is not feeling quite right. She was sick yesterday and spent the day in her bed. She is still in there today still not quite up to par.
