Dec. 22, 2007 - An Amazing Book

I am just finishing an amazing book.  I will be reading and re- reading it for some time. I want to be dangerously surrendered! and I wouldnt mind being gloriously ruined either. What a book. Kay traces her transformation from housewife to international HIV/AIDS advocate after being moved by a news article about AIDS, an article she could hardly look at.  She read it through her figures as she tried to not look at the pictures. She made a life-changing visit to Africa in 2003 and then visit to other parts of the world in need on God's love. She tells the stories of the world's great tragedies, HIV/AIDS, the genocides in Rwanda and Cambodia, sex slavery, orphaned children and deep poverty. I cried through many pages. Kay challenges us, the readers to engage with devastating situations and surrender ourselves to loving others—particularly those who may be considered outcasts—in the name of Christ. To stop changing the channel. To stop pretending it is not happening, in short to open our eyes and to love this hurting world as God loves it. She describes being gloriously ruined by her close knowledge of these tragic situations, having previously been unaware or simply too busy raising a family to realize what was happening in the world. Dont we all have the ability to put on our blinders and focus only on our world, our reality and stick our heads in the sand.  I loved it when she wrote about people who finally surrender to God and they say " OK Just dont make me go to Africia!" I have said these very words myself when I struggled with being baptized. In fact later when talking to my pastor about how cool it felt to have finally obeyed he jokingly said "See God hasnt asked you to go to Africa......yet"  Isnt it funny how we think when we finally surrender and let God be God without our "help" we are so afraid He will ask us to do something  crazy, like  jump on a plane and go to Africa. I do not know if Africa is in my future but I think I am ready to start surrendering. Africa can be too tough, can it???
