I don't know about you all, but my utmost favorite season is autumn. I love the colors, the smells, watching the farmers in the fields as they harvest, and hearing the crispness of the leaves under my feet as I walk. Of course, there is the relief of cooler temperatures, finally. I just do not do hot weather well...which is a post for another day. At any rate, I absolutely love autumn.
I was going to change my template (yeah...I know...AGAIN??!) to a back-to-school theme, but I am just so ready for autumn this year, that I went straight for the autumn theme! Don't those caramel apples look delicious?? Can't you smell the aroma of pumpkins in the air already? Before too long, mums will be blooming, and summer will officially be over. I am embracing autumn with both arms...it cannot come soon enough!

Because it is a considerable round trip to "Big City" for groceries, and other essentials, we always plan our trips, especially given gas prices of today. Yesterday, was one of those days, and a perfect example of why unschooling is so cool.
As I said in my previous post, I have been in a bit of a funk, and so getting up & going has been a bit of a challange. Not so much the getting up part, but the going. So, while I had planned a trip to "Big City", we got out of here much later than I intended. By the time we were done with our shopping, it was past dinner time, and wee one was hungry. I decided to make a rare stop at Rotten Ronnies...otherwise known as McDonald's. Wee one got a chicken nuggets kid's meal, and I, a chicken sandwich. RJ loves chicken nuggets, but he's also always interested in sampling what everyone else is eating, as is typical, I'm sure. While he was eating some of my sandwich, I asked him if I could have one of his nuggets. This was our conversation:
Me: "May I have a chicken nugget, sweetie?"
RJ: "Sure! Hey, Mom? How do they grow chicken nuggets?"
Me: "How do YOU think they grow chicken nuggets?"
RJ: "Well, I think they come from chickens, so, I think they make chicken nuggets from the chicken they've grown. So, how do they make chicken nuggets from chickens?"
Me: "How do YOU think?"
RJ: "I think they shoot the chicken, but I don't know how they make chicken nuggets."
Me: "You're right honey, they have to kill the chicken, and then they remove all the meat from the bones, grind and cook the meat, and put a batter on them. Then, McDonald's cooks them when someone orders them. Does it bother you that they have to kill the chicken for you to eat?"
RJ: "No...cos they sure taste good. Besides, G-d gave us animals to eat, so it's okay."
Me: "That's right. Do you know where pork chops come from?"
RJ: "Pigs?"
Me: "Yep. Do you know where steak and hamburgers come from?"
RJ: "Cows?"
Me: "Yep again. Does it bother you that we eat those animals too?"
RJ: "Nope. But how do they make the buns for hamburgers?"
Me: "With grains like flour, and sugar, and eggs, and a bit more, and they mix it all up, shape it how they want it, and cook it." (Okay...that's the simplified version!!)
RJ: "Is that how bread is made too?"
Me: "Yeah, pretty much."
RJ: "Cool. Can we try to make our own bread this week?"
Me, with a HUGE smile on my face: "Absolutely!"
Okay, so maybe this doesn't sound like much, but in the unschooling world, it is pretty awesome! To be able to witness the thought process in my wee one; to take what started out as a simple question about the food he was eating, and turn it into a project that will cover many subjects...science, math, reading, etc...at the request of my wee one, is amazing. I wouldn't miss this for the world...it's sad just how many do by turning their wee ones over to public schools. Why wouldn't you homeschool your wee ones??
