And I'm proud to be an American, where at least I know I'm free. And I won't forget the men who died, who gave that right to me.~Lee Greenwood

School update

Posted in Schooling

I figure it is time I give an update on our schooling since that is one of the reasons I started this blog.  We are a little more than halfway through our year due to breaks and hope to be able to take a break by the end of June.

Math - the girls are making progress here.  Eldestof5 has started MUS Pre-Algebra and is doing well despite her dislike for it.  She got a little behind due to our not schooling most of last summer but I hope to have her ready for Algebra by next fall.  Longleggedgirl is finishing up Fractions and has been challenged to make 100's on these last few lessons because her mistakes are mostly a lack of concentrating.  She has rose to the challenge so far.  The twins are making their way through division.  We have had to slow down with dividing the larger numbers but they are getting it.

English/Spelling - the twins are reviewing Phonics to help with their spelling.  We finished up the first book of Phonics Road and are now in the 2nd book.  I decided to continue with it because it also contains English and they were having problems with English for a Thoughtful Child.  They seem to need more instruction and practice.

Latin - Eldestof5 and Longleggedgirl are picking up Latin along with myself.  I am enjoying learning it with them; I just wish I had more time to study it.  We are starting Ch 10 of 14 so I need to decide whether to review or move onto Vol. 2 if we finish before our break.  I think it may be review to get the vocabulary more concrete before moving on.

Science - Eldestof5 is more than halfway through Exploring Physical Science from Apologia.  She is doing well and getting better at learning to study.  Daddy has had to help her with some of the physics modules though as that is not my strong point.  I look forward to Biology and Chemistry in the next 2 years!  I have not done much with the other 3 this year although I tried at the beginning of the year.  I may look into an actual curriculum for them to use next year although Longleggedgirl will start General Science in Apologia.

Tapestry - We are in Colonial America with Unit 3 of Y2.  We enjoyed our time study the renaissance and their artists but I enjoyed the most learning of the Reformation and the men who stood firm in their beliefs no matter the cost.  It will be neat to learn what is taking place in Europe at the same time America was being colonized.  Eldestof5 has already been making some connections that are neat to see.

Extracurricular - Longleggedgirl and Twin A are taking an art class through a local homeschool store.  They are loving it and learning some really neat techniques.  I will try and take some pictures of their work.  Eldestof5 and Twin B are getting ready to start volleyball through the Y.  That will last through the end of May.  We made the decision to not do swimming due to the cost and the time factor.  The girls have accepted the decision with good attitudes for which I am thankful.

Puddin' still enjoys playing and coloring during our school time.  She likes to pull out her chalkboard and say she is doing "school".  I am hoping to work with her with a little bit of structure soon but that is another post.

Back to School

Posted in Schooling

We actually started back last Monday so we are in our 2nd week.  We have done well staying on track which I am thankful for.  We didn't  change too much this year but we did add Latin for myself and the older girls.  We are using Latin Road to English Grammar so this also covers our English for this year.  We are at the end of Chapter 1 and have almost got the Lord's Prayer down, at least if we read it.

The twins are still struggling with spelling so I purchased the Phonics Road and am using that as a quick review for them.  I really like the program and can't wait to use it when Puddin is old enough.  We are doing about a weeks worth of work a day with it.

We have started Year 2 of Tapestry.  Last week was basically a review of the end of the Roman Empire which we never really covered.  This week we are into the Byzantine Empire.  I am looking forward to learning about the Middle Ages and Reformation as that is a period I have never really studied.

We are off to a strong start and hopefully, will be able to continue.  How is your school starting or continuing as summer winds down and fall begins?

Here I am!

Posted in Schooling

I really don't like it when I visit friends or random blog and find out that the blogs haven't been written in for months.  It hasn't been months since I wrote but it has been a few weeks.  I promise, if I ever decide to quit blogging, I will write a final entry, Lord willing, so people will know.  I have wanted to write recently but, to be truthful, when I have had the time, I haven't felt up to it or want to do something else .  I hope to get back into a regular schedule both of posting and reading.  I want to take advantage of the friends feature being back up and running!

Not much is happening on the house front.  We had 3 prospects look at it 2 weeks ago but it was either bigger than was being looked for or they preferred another neighborhood (a gated one).  I just keep trusting that God will send the right buyer at the right time!

Now that I am finished with getting the house ready, I have been doing some school planning.  We hope to start this coming Monday although we did do some math review this week.  I have been able to get all of Unit 1 for Year 2 of TOG planned.  The 2 older girls and I will be doing Latin this year using Latin Road to Grammar and I am using her phonics program to review with the twins in hopes it will help their spelling.  Longleggedgirl is going to give Apologia Science a try this year so we will see how that goes.  I haven't decided if I am going to do any science with the twins.  If so, it will probably just be some unit study type things.

Our weekends have been busy with swim meets at least every other week.  This weekend is the season end championship so please pray the girls do well.  I have challenged them to win a personal big ribbon and I think some of them have a chance if they swim like they have earlier this season.

I have also been trying to get some fun in.  We went to the beach and tubing on the Ichutucknee last week so that made for a busy week.  I have been dong some scrapbooking this week along with trying to work a puzzle that I have had for quite a few months.

I have some pictures I want to post so hopefully I will find some time this weekend after the meets so stay tune.  I'm still around

Looking for Saxon books?

Posted in Schooling

I finally decided that I am going to stick with MUS so I am getting rid of all my Saxon books.  I listed them on Homeschool Buy so go take a look.  I have from 5/4 to 8/7 and some DIVE Cd's.  There are a few other items that I listed also.

This is my place to describe our family as we walk the journey of homeschooling and grow in the Grace of Christ Jesus as a family.
