Year 2, Unit 1 of TOG

TOG week 22 & 23
Posted in Tapestry of Grace
The last 2 weeks have finished up our study of the Old Testament and the history there. We saw the Babylonians carry off the Judean and then the Persians coming into power and allowing the rebuilding of Jerusalem. God will now be silent for hundreds of years but He will still be controlling the events that go on.
I have added some links to my sidebar. One is to the Bookshelf at Tapestry of Grace. If you order through that link, I will receive credit so that would be greatly appreciated. Check it out even if you don't use Tapestry because they have lots of good reading books along with support items. The other link is to get a 3 week sample of Year 1 of Tapestry. If you are looking for a curriculum that is Bible based and your whole family can study together, consider giving it a try! Dh has been listening to the new Pop quiz CD's and has been able to join in discussions and seeing how much the girls are learning. He has liked it so much that he has listened to all of Unit 3 three times already!

We continued this week seeing the end of the kingdom of Israel. God carried out His promised judgment by allowing the Assyrians to conquer and carry away the Israelites to be scattered among themselves. It is sad to read of the end of this part of God's chosen people but, having read the history, they never tried to stop their drop down the slippery slope. Next week, we see the Babylonians and their role in the end of Judah's kingdom.

Week 20 carried us into the Divided Kingdom. This was due to Solomon's sins of allowing his heart to be divided between God and the world through his many wives. It is sad to read about. God's chosen people are now divided and sometimes even enemies. We see Israel heading down a path of destruction full force with one evil king after another. We see Judah a little better off as godly kings do occasionally arise and the priests move back to Jerusalem from Israel. God's mercy is still seen as he sends prophet after prophet to encourage repentance and atonement for sins. One of them we looked at was Elijah and how God cared for him by sending the ravens to feed him.
The twins put together a mobile with verses showing how God cares for us.

We started our 3rd unit continuing our look at the Old Testament. Solomon was our first focus. We looked at the Temple he built and compared it to the Tabernacle from Israel's wanderings. We also examined his divided heart and how this affected all of Israel. We also noted God's mercy in waiting until Solomon died to carry out His judgment. What a gracious and merciful Lord we worship!!
The girls had different activities. The twins built a small version of the temple. A friend had given us a book with punch out parts to put together to make it.
Longleggedgirl drew a picture of what she thought the temple looked like.
Eldestof5 concentrated on Solomon's vast wealth and the trading that was done as a result.

TOG Weeks 15-18
Posted in Tapestry of Grace
We finished these 4 weeks in 2 weeks. I chose to do this because of the holidays. I didn't want to have 2 weeks left after the holidays and try to review the material after all that time. It worked fairly well since these weeks mainly covered the Bible from Samuel to David. I highlighted the important information in the teacher's notes and then basically lectured through them.
Unit 3 arrived today so we will begin that the 2nd week of January.

We studied Ancient China and Ancient America during week 11 & 12. We mostly read our books and did geography due to things being very hectic. We watched Disney's Mulan and compared it to the original poem which was very interesting. We also went out for Chinese food which shocked DH as I am not known for liking that type of food. It was pretty good though. I guess my tastes have changed as I have gotten older. I still don't like plain white rice though! Yech!

Ancient India! We took a quick look at a civilization that began near a river, as all the other ancient civilizations have, and were advanced enough to even have a plumbing system in their cities, allowing each house to have a bathroom! Just think, our country didn't have indoor plumbing until around the middle of the 1800's. Here is a picture of the Lego model the younger girls made of an Indian city.

We had guests from India on Thursday evening. I ended up making WAAAYYY too much food. I had all kinds of salad fixings (romaine
lettuce, tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, radishes, etc...) and twice baked potatoes with mushrooms. They only ate some of the cucumbers along with 1 potato half. They had also brought a
gigantic dish of rice and another vegetable that I can't even begin to
pronounce of which they ate some. The rice was good, and that is coming from a non rice eater, as it
had cashews, peas, carrots and some other things but it was spicy after
a few bites. The orange vegetable dish was good too but it was
extremely spicy so I only finished the little bit I had taken. I had
meant to make some bread but forgot in time so I bought some white
mountain. They didn't eat any of that. We had an interesting conversation but dh carried most of it.
I was having a hard time understanding them due to their accents. We
discussed the difference in education, governments (they thought ours
was not corrupt at all which we had to laugh at but it isn't in the way
they meant) and touched on their religion. They seemed to have at
least a base knowledge of Christianity. The one thing that struck me out of the whole night though,
was when he said he had been in our country for 5 years and last night was
the first time he had been invited to someone's house. I was very
saddened by that! It was a nice evening and I think the Lord used it to show me
how we have a mission field right here in our own back yard.

Week 4 & 5 of TOG

I realize I haven't given a summary of our last 2 weeks of TOG. In week 4, we went back to the very beginning when God created! The younger girls made creation books while DD #1 made a God's majesty poster. We also learned about Noah's Ark. We measured out the length and width of it and figured about twelve 2000 sq feet homes would have fit in just 1 floor of it! That was a really awesome project to figure out. A highly recommended book is The True Story of Noah's Ark. It sticks very close to the Scriptures making sure to note where speculation is being made and has some gorgeous pictures in it. I am so glad I went ahead and bought this book.
In week 5, we headed into Ancient Mesopotamia and took a look at the place that Abraham came from and the people he had lived among. It was neat to see how he was called out from among the idol worshipers to be a worshipper of God! What a gracious and merciful God we serve! The girls made ziggurats, temples of the Sumerians, from legos. I took pictures but haven't had a chance to upload them yet. They did a really great job on them. They worked on them while watching an Abraham video. We also talked about the Tower of Babel.
Week 6 is going to be very short and we are mainly focusing on the Patriarchs which will get us back to the exodus from Egypt for the last 3 weeks.

I am a little late on this as we are into Day 2 of Week 4 but I figured I would go ahead and post anyway. We had a really short week due to the birthday at the beginning and Daddy having a day off at the end of the week. We didn't do any projects due to that nor an Egyptian dinner as I had thought about but that is okay. We did learn about the different myths that were sadly believed by the Egyptians and basically gave them no hope. I am so thankful to know the Truth and have hope and assurance of an eternity with the One and True God! We are enjoying our "remembering back" this week and I will post about it along with some pictures later in the week.

First Week of TOG
Posted in Tapestry of Grace
We finished our first week fairly well. Everything got accomplished except one science experiment with the Grammar level and I may work that in tomorrow. I'm pretty glad of that seeing that we had quite a few interruptions like having to do an errand day on the 1st (we do have to have food), and then baby getting sick this afternoon with a fever. DD1(Dialectic) did fairly well but we are going to have to work a little more on learning to answer questions in more depth as she had to go back and add to her accountability questions. She did well with her transparency maps once we figured them out.
The other 3 DD's (Grammar) did well. They were able to answer most of the questions asked during their discussion time. I guided them on the first map and they did the second one pretty much by themselves. The hardest part was figuring out how to have all 3 of them read from the same literature book but it worked out.
We did a salt map of Egypt. I pretty much just made the dough and let them at it. I tend to take over and I really want them to learn to work together and figure things out. I did suggest drawing out the map first so they would know where to put the dough but other than that, I stayed in the kitchen. It will be interesting to see how the painting goes next week.
We are looking forward to pyramids and mummies next week!

Curriculum for 2006-2007
Posted in Tapestry of Grace
DandelionSeeds asked us to share about our curriculum choices so I thought this would be a good time to share ours for this next year. I have made quite a few changes so it might make for an interesting year.
Math We made a major change here that caught even me off guard as I only decided it about a week or so before we went to the conference. We switched from Saxon to Math U See. There were many things leading up to this decision but the last one was the fact that while doing the first few lessons in their next Saxon books, they were missing problems. This should have been all review especially since we only took a 3 week break from Math. That bothered me that maybe they really didn't have the information down solid. This was confirmed when I received DD 1's test scores from her yearly evaluation and Math was her weak subject, more than I expected. So DD 1 is doing Epsilon (fractions), DD 2 is doing Delta (division) and DD 3 & 4 are doing Gamma (multiplication) after they bone up on some multi digit addition using worksheets from MUS's site.
English/Grammar DD 1 will be continuing in Easy Grammar Plus DD 2 will be doing Easy Grammar 5/6 DD 3 & 4 will be using English for a Thoughtful Child
History/Literature/Writing Tapestry of Grace was my choice here. I have been looking at this for 3 or 4 months and I just kept getting more excited about it. I still am. We are beginning with Year 1 Redesigned so it is scheduled for me to receive the first unit this month. For now, I am looking over the book list and checking what our library has.
Science DD 1 is going to use Apologia General Science. We went with the CD so she wouldn't be overwhelmed by the size of the textbook. She wants to start now but I told her to hold on until July. I am not going to do anything formal with the others but I might throw in some lessons here and there.
Handwriting We use Getty/Dubay Italic Handwriting. I love how nicely it looks and have even adapted some of it into my handwriting. DD 2 is doing Book F and DD 3 & 4 are doing Book D.
Vocabulary DD 1 Wordly Wise 3000 Book 3 DD 2 Wordly Wise 3000 Book 1 DD 3 & 4 Wordly Wise 3000 Book B
ART I Can Do All Things by Barry Stebbing
Dandelion also wanted to know what worked well last year. The best thing I did was having us do math first and I limited it to an hour. It really made a difference with our day. As for what didn't work well, it would have to be finding a consistent time for our Bible time. Part of that had to do with having a baby in the house and the other was just life. I really struggle with having the same schedule day to day let along week to week. Appts come up, errands have to be run, ministry opportunities present themselves. I will continue to strive through the Lord's strength though!
As for when we will start, we go year round so we are already into our math and english. Lord Willing, we will begin everything else in August.
