Puritan Worship

Posted in Worship

Can you imagine worshipping as the Puritans did?

I love the idea of worship that is simple, focused on God, and free from distraction.  *Picture a service filled only with psalm singing, prayer, reading of the Word, and preaching.  Imagine if there were no choir performance, no "special music", and no offering plate passed around.

The Free Church of Scotland (Continuing) is a denomination that has been around since the time of the Reformation.  They are now planting congregations in North America.   They have an order of worship that is unlike any other I have experienced.  If *this sort of worship service interests you, (or if distinctives such as exclusive psalmody, Sabbath observance, and head coverings for women during public worship make your ears perk up) go to their home page:  http://www.freechurchcontinuing.co.uk/index.htm

For more of the history of the Free Church click:  ABOUT US for history and click CHURCH LOCATOR to find a congregation near you (more are being planted so keep checking back).

My husband and I attended the Free Church Continuing while we lived in Scotland. We're waiting for the church plant in our area ;)

I have been thoroughly enjoying reading your archives! Your thoughts on worship especially. Would you consider posting something about the women's head coverings? That is something that has been on my mind lately, but apparently not on anyone else's in my church.

Hi nitrocat!

About head coverings in public worship: Many years ago I spent several months researching 1 Corinthians 11. I found it interesting that prior to the 50s the majority of commentators said the passage applied to women today because Paul's reasoning was based on the creation order. But with the rise of feminism and liberation theology, commentators started saying the passage was merely "cultural." I believe Paul's argument is based on the creation order--and so I believe that the command holds true today. There are a handful of women in the church we are attending who wear hats during worship.

The more I read of your blog the more I enjoy it. Though we do not go to a FCSC church (none are close enough), we have many friends attending and joining their denomination. Would you happen to be going to their North American Conference in VA this August? We will be and it would be great to meet you!
