A Stranger's Shocking Comments About Our Family Size

Posted in Family

We often get stares, glares, and rude comments from strangers about the size of our family, but we were shocked on Saturday by the comment one lady made.

We were all at the park and my husband and I were sitting on a bench with our one year old.  Our six, five, four, and two year old were playing together several feet away.  From across the way, a lady rose from a bench and headed straight for us.  She had a grave expression and my husband and I both braced ourselves for the comments that we knew were coming.

"I'm sorry," she said "but I just have to say something to you."  We both took deep breaths..."I am so pleased to see your large family!  Most young couples today just have pets.  Are you Christians?"  We nodded, now in complete shock as we tried to process what was being said.  "You are doing the Lord's work and I hope you will not get discouraged no matter what people say to you.  I consider you to be the pioneers of our day."  And she continued with several other kind remarks about our children but I was getting teary-eyed at this point and it was hard to concentrate.

It was very encouraging to meet a fellow Christian who shares our beliefs about children and it was so kind of her to go out of her way to speak encouraging words to us!  I hope that I will remember to encourage other large families that I see in public.  I suspect they rarely hear kind words from strangers.

That is so awesome that God blessed you with that experience. We had something sort of similar once. One night at Walmart a woman asked me how many kids I had, and as I told her "we have 5 children" I braced myself for criticism; but then she told me she was happy to see my family, the kids were so well behaved, large families are so rare now, and she herself had 8 children! I was very blessed by that!

I was so relieved to hear the good and Biblical response you received! I don't remember who had the link on their site but it was about a liberal, non- Christian who was making the case that the world population will actually be decreasing at its current fall and that in America the major change is the from the conservative Christian community that is again seeing large families as our calling from God. How true it is that God works in wondrous ways. Maybe these large Christian families will be the base that turns our nation back to God! Again, I join the lady at the park to say that you are doing the will of God and I pray more will see this in the scripture. honor it in the pulpit and live it! In Him, Eva
P.S. I only have three because of my own selfishness and I have repented and pray the Lord will reopen my womb or allow us to adopt!

Check out the book "Fewer." It describes statistically how most people in the world are not having enough children for replacement rate!

I was all prepared for her to say something that would make my blood boil, but what an encouragement! For some reason it's even more meanginful when it's a stranger that has gone out of their way to build us up!

I'm having a contest over at my blog. Come check it out!

I LOVE it when someone encourges us while we're out!! We mommies with many littles especially need it I think. I hope I too can bless women in this way someday.

Awww, how sweet she was to encourage you in that way. I can't understand why people think that they would have a right to comment *negatively* to you in the first place. ??? People do it to us all the time too, but I don't care, I just figure that it is their loss not to have had their quiver full of God's blessings.
I just read your post on the Veritas Training in PA and was just wishing that we could have made that a Girl's Trip. It sounds like it was a great blessing. I have always loved to read both of the Wilsons' work and can certainly see the grace and mercy and love that they exhibit, just in a forthright, matter-of-fact kind of way. Hee-hee!
Well now that I have written a book of a comment, I will sign off. Tell those sweet little ones that Ms. Gayle says hello. :)

That is wonderful.
We get a lot of nice comments too. Mostly by older women. They love seeing all the children.
Blessings,

Having 6 kids I have heard my share of ugly comments. ("Don't you know that the earth is already overpopulated?!") What a blessing to hear such a wonderful comment!! Thank you for sharing.

Many blessings to you & your husband for doing the will of God. I only have 2, but wanted more, but my Mom & Mother-in-Law kept on at me until I had my tubes tied. Regret has been in my heart from the moment I left the delivery room. Keep letting God bless you & your husband. Blessings, Traci
