Off the Grid in the Montana Rockies

Rainy Day

A nice summer rain has forced us indoors today, giving me and the children a very needed break.

Unfortunately we weren't able to make the Family Camp, but we were able to head out to hike and camp in YNP.  I know, you must be asking yourselves why we would go there, again.  Yellowstone was one of the biggest reasons for moving this way.  Everyone has their favorite hang out spot, ours is YNP.  By the end of this summer I will honestly be able to say that I spent the summer in the Park.

But, being in Yellowstone isn't the only thing going on here.  We are working on several home projects.  Cutting trails, landscaping, keeping down the noxious weeds, and starting to build a guest cabin.  We are trying to use materials right from our land and keep our costs down.  The children are helping in all of these projects and are feeling very accomplished.

We are continuing to tackle difficult issues that come with off grid living- learning more about conservation and what it means in our individual lives and individual choices.  I recently learned how to unclog our septic tank-a job my husband was thankful I was willing to do.  He says most wives would have called their hubbies home....a true helpmeet I am, so he tells me!!

We have now lived here a year.  I can tell you that we are closer, stronger, and better for being here.  We have had may challenges and had to overcome obstacles-physical, emotional, and financial.  We have been victorious in every one....because we stuck together as a family.

We are also learning to say no the the world and following God's voice in many areas.  Child raising, daily living, and environmental issues.  Some days I just marvel at the simple way we live....feeling so thankful for our eyes being opened and the peace it brings.

I have been trying to catch up on blogs and have noticed that I am not the only one posting less.....it is good to hear what is going on in everyone's lives and nice to know that most are taking full advantage of the sun.  My friend Kristy shared about a movie she recently saw Into the Wild.  I will warn you that there is nudity and language in this film.  But, it is relevant to the story....a true story.  I, too, related greatly to this film.

I am also doing a great deal of reading this summer.  I have read a number of books dealing with conservation and environmentalism.  Right now I am reading A Mending at the Edge by Jane Kirkpatrick.

In other news, one of our children has shared that they feel deeply called into missions work.  This child has been deeply touched and it has been a joy for hubby and I to watch this child have a very real and personal relationship with Jesus.  As a family we have been talking about how God might use us now, perhaps skipping Christmas like the Kranks, but visit a third world country to serve.  As it comes to mind, pray for God's leading in our lives in this area.

Here are some pictures of our last weeks:

Kids with an antler shed from a bull elk we found on a backcountry hike in YNP

A fawn deer that we watched one morning near Mammoth Hot Springs

A coyote listening intently to the cries of a nearby wolf pack

Family standing at the top of Bunsen Peak

Japer snuggling with our new mousekiller kitty Jasmine

The kids and I standing at the summit of Mt. Washburn-10,243 feet

This guy decided to join us on the Garnet Hill Loop Trail....lucky for us he got off the trail and let us pass safely

Hubby on Washburn

Sissy and I at the Natural Bridge

Just one of hundreds of hot springs used in a recent microbe lesson

This bison thought that he'd paid for our campsite...not us!

Surely you've seen and read enough by now.  Our upcoming days will be filled with much of the same.  We are getting ready to celebrate two birthdays and I will officially be a mom to two teenagers!  Hubby's family is spending their days saying goodbye to a much beloved grandpa....he is slipping away to that awful disease of Alzheimer's...please pray for them.

See ya soon!

I have been to Yellowstone several times, and it is indeed one of my favorite places to visit. How fortunate for you to be so close. Love your wildlife pictures! I'm sorry to hear about grandpa slipping away - so hard to say goodbye! I'll pray for you and your family.

How fun to be so close to YNP. We lived in CA for a while, near the Sierra Nevadas, they're beautiful. The redwoods are extraordinary! We loved seeing them and going up every few months.

I love, love, LOVE Yellowstone!!! A few years back my dh asked me where I would like to go for my birthday and I told him Yellowstone. He said "book it". So sweet!!! And as I have mentioned before... You make me so jealous!! :-) Your family is living my dream!! My dh hates cold weather so I don't know that my dream will ever be more than that. I will have to pacify myself with reading your blog and being thankful that you are sharing about your life and family. :-) Blessings!! Kris
