Ancient Romans Lesson Plan

Posted in History Lesson Plans

We are currently working on a study of the Ancient Romans.  This is divided into several sections:

  • Housing
  • Roads
  • Pastimes
  • Roman Numerals
  • Soldiers
  • Mosaics

Housing - Differences between Roman housing and the sort of houses (ie little more than mud huts!) that were around before - brick walls, glass windows, beautifully tiled floors, underfloor heating and, in the case of the very rich, indoor baths. For a floorplan and more information about a typical Roman house go here: Roman Houses

Roads - Before the Romans, roads were basically dirt tracks. Investigate how the Romans managed to build such straight roads and learn about the different layers that made up the road. Roman Roads

Extra:  Cards showing the different layers of Roman road (for link see below)

Pastimes - The Romans enjoyed many leisure times activities although some of them (eg Gladiators) seem a bit violent! Try this website for lots more information about Roman pastimes.Roman Pastimes

Roman Numerals - The Romans created a number system that is still in use today! Visit this website which is entirely dedicated to roman numerals.Roman Numerals

Extra: Roman numeral cards for numbers 1-10 (see below for link)

Soldiers - The Roman army was made up only of men - no women could join and, once a man had joined the army he had to stay a soldier for at least 24 years! This BBC website has lots of information about the Roman army (as well as plenty of other fascinating information too!)Roman Army

Also, try this website for a great game of dress up the Roman soldier :) Roman dress up game

Mosaics - The Romans decorated their houses very elaborately and this included detailed floor tiling called mosaic. You can have fun at the following website making your own mosaic pattern. Mosaic Maker

Finally, a study of the Ancient Romans would not be complete without considering some of the fantastic monuments they built. I have included here a set of cards containing just some of these. Perhaps they could be taken, one at a time, and studied in more depth.

Welcome!

Welcome to the Montessori Inspired Homeschool.  This is a spin-off from my main Sellers Family Homeschool blog.  I was starting to build up such a large collection of lesson plans and homemade materials that I decided to have a seperate blog to list them all in.

As the title suggests, most of the materials/lesson plans are Montessori "inspired" meaning that Montessori homeschoolers should find them useful but also that even homeschoolers who don't use this method will hopefully find something they can use.

I really hope that some of you may find this blog useful and inspiring!

~ Sarah
