I have been craving delicious pastries for years. You see, in Montreal, good pastry shops are a dime a dozen. Everywhere you go, cheese danish, mille feuille, apple turnovers, marzipan tortes.. you name it, they've got it. In 1996 we moved from Montreal to Kingston, Ontario, where, the culture just isn't one that supports such luscious and rich pastries, but, we were close enough to drive home every few months and have our fill of all the yummy Montreal foods we were raised on.
Then came the year 2000, and we packed our bags and moved here to Saskatchewan. Food here is different. Perogies, cabbage rolls, cole slaw.... and virtually nothing in the way of a pastry. Sure, there are donut shops, but a donut can only take you so far. A rich pastry made of real butter, flaky pastry and rich fillings.. now there's a huge hole here when it comes to this kind of thing.
Last weekend, I stopped to buy gas. At the till were blueberry and cherry turnovers in a plastic wrap bag. I knew it wouldn't satisfy my craving, but.. it was sweet and filling, it would fill the hole in our tummies until we could get home.
Well, as I put my head into the freezer this afternoon to choose something for lunch, I noticed some phyllo pastry, so I pulled it out. I considered making apple turnovers, or a meat dish wrapped in phyllo. Then I had a brainstorm. I googled "recipe Mille Feuille" I agonzied a moment as it searched. I feared that it might be called something different in the "English Speaking World". But I found this recipe linked on someone's blog. Perfect.
Well, seeing as it's Mother's Day and all, I decided to treat the family to some Mille Feuille, but with a more chocolate version of the recipe. Here's what it looked like before we ate it.

And these are flowers that Janney, Asher and Rourke picked for me on a little walk they went on up the road. Poor Asher came home with a bump on his noggin, he fell out of the stroller.
