BFS #23 -- Flames of Passion

WEEE, Nancy used my idea for this weeks BFS.. what an honour.

My friend Susan and I were talking last week about how we really need a new passion. For so long, raising kids, homeschooling, knitting, reading, learning about unassisted childbirth, and healing with herbs has really fed all my passions, but I feel like I've sort of become saturated, learned all I need, or at least know where to go easily for updates or to answer a question.

But now I need something new.  Something to challenge me and make me feel that burning desire to dig deeper.

I think it'll be learning to read Hebrew. I already have baby knowledge. I know the letters, the sounds they make, and I can sound out words - but I want more. I want to be able to read Hebrew.  Wouldn't it be cool to be able to read  Frog and Toad Together in Hebrew? or Madeline? or Curious George?

Think of how exciting it would be to read Where the Wild Things Are in God's Perfect Original language?

Seriously, while I'd love to read these wonderful children's books, the real flames behind my desire to read Hebrew is not for children's books, it's to read God's Love story to us, in it's original language, no interpretation or slant by the one who translated it, just God -speaking directly to me.  To truly understand the depth of the mean behind each individual word.

Here's what I mean. In our English Bibles, the words of Genesis 1:1 read like this:
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. (CJB),(KJV)and(NIV)
But look at how full it is when you read it in Hebrew  (hear it read at Hebrew for Christians  I couldn't capture the sound file.)

בראשית ברא אלהים את השמים ואת הארץ

The word Brei'sheet: Beit, Reish, Alef, Shin, Yod, Tav.
Here is JUST THE FIRST WORD of the Torah, and it tells the whole story of God's love. This is taken from Rico Cortes website, Wisdom In Torah.

The story here: The father, who is the head of the house, created a house (or place) for His son, and taught him the alef-bet. And by the strength of Yah, He will judge the land with fire, and He will put us to shame on the first of Tishrei, and they will all fear Him, and will repent when he dies on the cross, and their desire will be for Him. And in Integrity, He will make a covenant of fire with us. And the shabbat will be a light for His daughter, mankind, for it was made as a gift for us.

The WHOLE GOSPEL JUST IN THE FIRST WORD OF SCRIPTURE IN HEBREW.

God's language is so much more complete than our English - how much more we can know our God - our Saviour - through reading HIS word in HIS language.

And that's why I want to learn to read Hebrew. - but it's a long journey. I have to practice, get more fluid in my ability to read, and develop my vocabulary.   - And if you think I wrote this whole post myself.. lol.  NOPE, I had to call Trent to help me with that whole Bresheit thing.  How neat to be able to FOLLOW your child in his passions.

A WONDERFUL passion! I was just contemplating learning basic Greek next year. (Actually, I was just going to read "Greek for the Rest of Us" by William Mounce.) But, I'm wondering if I could actually learn Hebrew before Greek. The thought of becoming fluent enough to understand the Bible blows my mind. But, I would LOVE that. I imagine it will take lots of time and perseverance. Hebrew seems much more difficult than Greek. Do you have any experience with the latter?

p.s. Great BFS idea!!!

How interesting that you want to learn Hebrew. It won't be an easy task, that's for sure. I want to learn Latin, so I can teach my daughter the original meanings of words....goes hand in hand with your learning Hebrew. I'll get another email off to you, I've not forgotten or bypassed you, I've just been exhausted the last two days. Thanks for the suggestion for the BFS this week. I'm anxious to see who'll jump on the bandwagon and volunteer something for next week.

I had to giggle at the comment about reading Where the Wild Things are "in God's perfect language." :) (That was my favorite book when I was a preschooler, btw.)

It sounds as though we have some things in common. We (my family) don't consider ourselves "Messianic," but we are very interested in the Jewish roots of our faith. Our homeschooling style is very relaxed, and our daughters were both born at home, unassisted. I'm adding your feed to my reader. :)

That was fascinating! I tried to teach myself Hebrew once, and was very discouraged. What have you used that has worked?

My kids and I have been trying to learn Latin for about a year (off and on) but I'm not sure I would be up to learning all those 'picture' words. It would be awesome though to be able to read exactly what was originally written from God in the original language. I pray that you will see your passion fulfilled.

What a neat passion to have! I think it would be neat to read God's original Word as well.
Thanks for recommending epicurious.com to me in your comment you left me. The pictures alone look scrumptious!

Learning Hebrew is a wonderful passion to have! I would like to learn Hebrew, although NT Greek is first on my list (mostly because I think it will be a bit less difficult). Of course, your breakdown of the first word of the Torah makes me want to learn Hebrew first! Our God is so amazing!

In our Bible College we had to learn Greek and Hebrew alphabets. It is in preparation for a later part of the class where we will be doing word studies. I have to admit, I am looking forward to that part of the class.

How fascinating! I've always theorized that the pre-Babel language was likely Hebrew. God's perfect language. I tried Greek once. The mistake was doing it at a secular university. The pace was set according to the Latin majors' progress, and when I went to talk to the prof about the hard time I was having assimilating all the material each night, he actually ended up telling me it "was like breathing." I just looked at him and told him I didn't think he understood that I was really having a hard time with the course. I think he must have remembered me and had mercy, grading me for effort.
Sounds like you'll have fun with this one!
Keep us posted on these little tidbits you're gleaning....

Sombra, I too want to read His word, see what He HIMSELF wrote instead of reading my English bible and going through someone else's filter. I do have to rely on our rabbi as he translates from Hebrew into English, but he tells us every time, LEARN TO READ HEBREW SO YOU KNOW THAT YOU KNOW. Gotta love that. He gets so frustrated with English translations and commonly points out errors and always says he wonders how in the world they got that translation. :P

Blessings to you,
Ginnie
