What Do You Do On A Rainy Day

Living in Saskatchewan for the last 8 years, we have experienced a great changed in our opportunities have some real rainy day play. When we lived back in Kingston, a good downpour would leave wonderful puddles to go puddle stomping in.. and we did it with great frequency.  In Saskatchewan, it's pretty dry, when it rains, it tends to only rain a few minutes, and usually in tiny fine fine rain drops.  Few and far between are the kinds of rains that leave puddles.

This year has been a bumper crop of puddle producing rains.  Of course, this would be the year we dug up the driveway and yard producing VERY MUDDY PUDDLES.

And so, I had to video tape parts of today's rainy day play,

And now, I think it behooves me to share a fun poem with you by one of Canada's beloved children's poets.

The Muddy Puddle

by Dennis Lee from “Garbage Delight”

I am sitting

In the middle

Of a rather Muddy

Puddle,

With my bottom

Full of bubbles

And my rubbers

Full of Mud,

While my jacket

And my sweater

Go on slowly

Getting wetter

As I very

Slowly settle

To the Bottom

Of the Mud.

And I find that

What a person

With a Puddle

Round her middle

Thinks of mostly

In the muddle

Is the Muddi-

Ness of Mud

A few days ago I shared some pictures of Myles wearing a Bee Glove. Well, Today, Rourke was wearing mud gloves and mud shoes. Our mud is composed of sand and clay with just a little loamy soil.. it's the kind of mud where every footstep increases your height as you add mud to the bottom of your shoes.  Rourke ran around with these hands full of mud trying to get Asher full of mud too. This ended in a crying baby brother.. who's naked bottom was slathered with mud. Rourke gave him a bit of a bath in the wheelbarrow.  Later they both had to come in and take a real bath, leaving the bottom of my bathtub covered in an inch of mud. I'd love to say that everyone is nice and clean right now, but they aren't, they're outside again, playing frizbee. The rain has stopped, but dad and the kids are out getting their last hour of playtime in the wet yard.

I.. in my very pregnant state.. will not be participating!

Love the poem! It reminds me of the first summer we moved out of the city to a small town.

Much to the delight and amusement of the neighbours, my 2yr old son sat in the pothole in the middle of the driveway, splashing happily away, water up around his middle. It was the perfect size for his little legs and bum.

I loved the sound of joy that accompanied Rourke's trip through the mud puddle on his bike! You are a way fun mom ~
