A New Learned Skill

I was in a situation this last week where Janney asked me how to spell her first name (Alison) to write on her paper, and I helped Asher to write his name on a paper.  There were other children in the group, and other parents, but there was a distinction between me and one woman. The other mother did not volunteer to help teach her child how to spell her name, she didn't give any assistance.. the teachable moment was lost. I didn't notice it, someone else had to point it out to me.  I was praised for what I did naturally, and it was noticed what didn't come naturally to the other parent.

I wonder how often I miss teachable moments?  On the other hand, there are so many teachable moments that I don't miss.. like this one tonight. Asher wanted to help me make my cakes, so I asked him to crack the eggs into the measuring cup. He's never done this before, but he has watched Janney do it, and me too.  So I showed him the first one, and then I captured these next 3 on video.

Isn't that wonderful. Go back and look at the expression on his face, such concentration and determination... Sigh, you can't see it.. but it was so cute.

He can also peddle his bike, course he has training wheels, but it took Janney a long time to learn that skill, he seems to have mastered it quite easily.

He's a natural! The other day I was squeezing limes and needed to do a bunch. Along came Heidi who wanted to do it. I taught her how and she did ALL the rest. (about 20-30 halves) We are too quick to say "you're too small" when really they are so sharp and do a great job with many many tasks.

Teaching children is fun! Beverly has made her own scrambled eggs twice now... while closely supervised. Marissa can't believe I trust her around a hot stove.
