Little Kids Discovered Lego

Last night, Janney wanted me to go outsides and build her a doll house for her dolls. Well, I was just about to hunker down and make dinner, so - no - can't make a doll house, BUT I tole Myles to go get some Legos and I showed her how to build with them.. and she and Myles and Asher played for a while, and Elias  tossed them around the kitchen a bit.

Today, the bulk of the legos are back upstairs, but a few straggling pieces are here, and Asher and Elias are keen on the little cars that were built.

We have a cool system for managing legos. We use a fitted sheet on the floor, and all the pieces stay on the sheet, at the end of play time, pick up the edges of the sheet, and voila, they're easy to cart away and put back in the big rubbermaid  bucket.  Myles also has a little truck that you can drive around and it "vacuums" up the straggling pieces.

However... this doesn't keep track of these bits that are on the cars that Asher and Elias are playing with.. but that's only about 20 pieces, I can live with 20 lego pieces underfoot.. I think

In The Hands of A Three Year Old

So this is what life looks like through the eyes of a 3 year old. Asher got a hold of Myles camera and was snapping away when I found him. I won't offend your eyes with all the blurry ones, but these ones are cute.

The very important shelf in the mud room where things are out of reach

The very important freezer where the freezees are kept

The very important top of the freezer where cookies cool when they come out of the oven

Self portrait

Look up, look way up.. and see the light

Mudroom floor

New pants - very cool new pants he's been wearing for the last 4 days

New kitchen

Janney's Chanukkiah - that she's not supposed to have, but this got photographed a good dozen times, from slightly different angles each time.

fun brother

A New Learned Skill

I was in a situation this last week where Janney asked me how to spell her first name (Alison) to write on her paper, and I helped Asher to write his name on a paper.  There were other children in the group, and other parents, but there was a distinction between me and one woman. The other mother did not volunteer to help teach her child how to spell her name, she didn't give any assistance.. the teachable moment was lost. I didn't notice it, someone else had to point it out to me.  I was praised for what I did naturally, and it was noticed what didn't come naturally to the other parent.

I wonder how often I miss teachable moments?  On the other hand, there are so many teachable moments that I don't miss.. like this one tonight. Asher wanted to help me make my cakes, so I asked him to crack the eggs into the measuring cup. He's never done this before, but he has watched Janney do it, and me too.  So I showed him the first one, and then I captured these next 3 on video.

Isn't that wonderful. Go back and look at the expression on his face, such concentration and determination... Sigh, you can't see it.. but it was so cute.

He can also peddle his bike, course he has training wheels, but it took Janney a long time to learn that skill, he seems to have mastered it quite easily.

The Journey To Guitar

Stuart and Rourke both have guitars. They stand in the corner of Stuart's office.

But Asher calles them  bitars.. Daddy's bitar and Rourke's bitar.

Stuart sat with him last night trying to get him to say it properly, but over and over he said bitar.

So Stuart had him say GO - Go. Go.Go. Go.Go

Then he had him say Gui Gui Gui Gui Gui

Then Guit, Guit,. Guit Guit

And then finally Asher blurt out Guitar.. HOORRAY!!

Then Stuart asked him, "What's that?" "Daddy's bitar and Rourke's bitar"  LOL

But today he seems to be saying guitar more and more. Bitar sneeks out occasionally, but guitar is coming more and more.

We had a similar experience with Janney with the word "bisactly".. which now comes out "exactly".. she says "exsgusting" and "breakthist".

Asher has a bit of a lisp with his "th" sounds, but I'm sure he'll grow out of it.

I love language, and watching and listening as they learn to enunciate the sounds properly...

Will He Live?

A few days ago, Asher brought the dish rack down upon his head, and I was so scared he was hurt.  Today, he got snotties on his shirt, so I took it off him and sent him upstairs to get a new shirt.  I was "indisposed in the ladies room" when I heard him start to cry. I called up to him and dashed upstairs. The dresser fell over on him. Trent had hung some shirts on hangers off the front of Asher's dresser, making the front very heavy.  Fortunately when it fell over, it  landed on the edge of Trent's bed. Yes, Asher got knocked over, but he didn't get caught underneath.

Now if that wasn't enough, I have a baby monitor up on top of my computer desk. Asher came along and grabbed the wire and pulled the monitor onto his head. Stuart picked it up and put it back up, and Asher did it again.

SIGH - So I said, "Will that boy live?"

Myles pipes in - "Mum, I was run over by a car, and I lived to be 14. I'm sure he's going to live."   Ummm Hummm, Myles:
  • got run over by a car,
  • locked himself into a toy chest,
  • wrapped dental floss around and around and around his neck,
  • locked himself into a Coleman cooler, l
  • ocked himself into the trunk of a car,
  • nearly froze to death on the hill out by the dugout,
  • been thrown from Aragorn and landed on a big rock,
  • had his finger nearly chopped through by Trent,
  • broken his collar bone in a pillow fight.........
Yep, Myles has made it this far.. I guess Asher's doing fine in comparison.

Sweety Snotty Pants

My sweety came home from work this evening, all nicely dressed in his office attire. He sat down next to me as I nursed and we said our hellos.  Asher crawled up onto daddy's lap for a cuddle, and began to pick his nose.. and promptly wiped his finger off on daddy's nice pants!

Ah the joys of parenthood.

Crash

I was talking to my mum on the phone tonight, one of the topics we discussed was the blood curdling scream she heard from a dog in her building - probably got stepped on or caught in a door.  So as we were talking, I was washing dishes and had just finished a load and was starting to put things away. Asher wanted to climb onto the counter, but instead of grabbing the edge of the counter, he grabbed the edge of the dish rack and brought the whole thing down on me and on himself.    Dishes crashed to the floor, I let out a scream as I got hit in the arm and shoulder and told mum I had to go.

I picked up Asher and carried him away and hugged him as we both dealt with the shock of the event.  He's fine, not a scratch or bruise on him, but he sure was scared. I have a sore shoulder and a sore wrist.

Poor mum. I called her back as soon as Asher was calm. She was very shaken by my scream and sudden hang up, she had no way of knowing what had happened or if we were ok. -

Sadly, I lost some Sabbath dishes and a Yom Teruah glass plate from Israel.. but that's just stuff. Asher is Ok and that's all that matters to me. (I had to learn that over time.. I wasn't always like this.. the older boys often got into trouble for breaking things instead of getting my comfort and sympathy when they should have)

I'm Sorry, He's Just SO Cute

I can't help it, these pictures of Asher are just so cute, I have to show you all of them, even though many of them are similar... each one is just slightly different, and slightly more cute.
