Oct. 16, 2009 Last Counter In the Kitchen
Stuart built the last counter in the kitchen last Sunday. The first one he built didn't fit right, so we ordered new laminate and now he's rebuilt it.

Ohh, and you can see my new oven is in on the left of this picture. It works nicely!!

Everyone needs a helper to get a job done, Elias is a good helper

Elias is actually trying to take my kitchen tools out of this drawer.. things like rolling pins and slotted spoons and knives.. sigh..

Dontcha just love chubby baby legs

Aug. 10, 2009 Blogging For Jennifer - Kitchen Countertop
Argh.. so frustrated with firefox crashing..
here's the pic for now, maybe I'll come back and tell you about it later.
OK, I'm back. I was saying that the first day Stuart went to install the stainless steel sink and tap, he put them up on the counter and I balked.. I asked him to hold of and we'd go get the black sink with the oiled bronze tap and see how it looked, and install the one I liked best. My good man agreed to do that.. and now it's in. The dishwasher is installed too. And now he's putting on the edge and back splash. The only thing missing on this side of the kitchen is the grout.

Now the other thing I was sharing before Firefox crashed, was that when I was 10, my parents bought a house with a PINK kitchen. The first thing they did was repaint that kitchen, cream cupboard doors with chocolate brown cabinets. Then they put up a nice tile between the countertop and the cupboards that looked like cracked oatmeal cookies. But for the 9 years I lived there, every time I did the dishes or cooked at the stove, I got to look at the lines of morter and the little + shaped tile spacers, because those tiles NEVER GOT GROUT. If Stuart were to fail to do that small detail, I would get it done, I do not care to look at these slate tiles without grout between them! |

Jun. 1, 2009 Progress on the Kitchen Renovations
When a renovation has taken as long as this one, with each step finding we need to dig deeper and deeper into the "gutted" room, it has taken it's psychological toll. We've been growing tired of the project and the inconveniences of having no kitchen.
Now we're starting to feel like there's some progress, a layer of gyproc walls does wonders for the psychy.

May. 18, 2009 Renovation Update.
The ceiling has been reinforced, and now the upstairs isn't so sloped.

This door frame is now supported by a proper header and crutches.

This is the second pocket door installed, and some of the wiring re-done

The kitchen is coming along.. I know some people think this is moving too slowly.. and they couldn't cope, but I am managing most days. The cabinets aren't even in yet, so we're still moving at a good pace. |

May. 2, 2009 Design Specs For The New Kitchen
Here are the design specs for the new kitchen. As I was "dreaming up" this kitchen, I realized that the colour scheme I was dreaming up was the complete reverse from the kitchen. i wanted the colours from the flooring of the livingroom on the walls in the kitchen, and I wanted the colours from the walls in the livingrom on the floors in the kitchen... So, visuallize with me.. Maple cabinetry in a Shaker style - Mine are not quite like this, I have not chosen any with glass doors, and my cupboards do not have any drawers at the top of the stack, only cupboard.. and other stacks have 4 drawers . I have some cabinets that are floor to ceiling, others are cabinet and counter and then cabinets above. I have chosen to have a wall oven and a cook stove, not a range unit. My flooring will be Tarkett Alamo Stone in the Dark Rust colourway. It's a glueless floating floor, their highest quality product. I want Behr's Hawiian Cinder for paint on the walls. This computer version is not exactly the same, but you get the idea. And Formica's Colorado Slate for counter tops, with a slate tile edge and backsplash There will be two pocket doors from the mudroom in the east and from the livingroom in the west.. For lighting, though my Facebook Friends all gave me discouragement on halogen lighting, I have decided to go with it none-the less.. sorry friends, it's not that I don't trust your judgement, it's that given my choices.. this was just affordable and stilish enough and the dealer gave me a tip about changing the bulbs, put a piece of masking tape on the bulb to give it a bit of grip! I'm have two of these, but without the lengthening rods, they'll be shorter and closer to the ceiling, not hanging like this. and I'll have this one above the sink Now for appliances, I've chosen Maytag products.. for which I can't grab pictures, so, if you're interested, follow these links to the Microwave/vent, wall oven, dishwasher and Cook top. All my appliances will have a white finish to go with my existing two white fridges. I still have to choose door handles and a sink and tap... but, before we do that, we'll have to figure out what to do with the ceiling.. when we took down the ceiling, we found that the rafters had been cut, and so, before we cover them up, we have to fix this structural problem.. those dark rafters are cut and intersected by this light coloured beam....it's not structurally sound and needs to be fixed |

Apr. 27, 2009 Kitchen Renovations Episode 2
It's a slow process, but it's coming along. We faced a challenge today. Stuart really didn't want to pull down the ceiling, but we have one spot in the kitchen, where the new oven will go, but the measurement between floor and ceiling in this spot was to short. We need 94 inches for the cabinets, and this spot was exactly 94 inches - and we still need to put in the ceiling. So, we pulled down the existing ceiling and will put up a new one. We were going to just add a new layer. So you may be wondering what we're going to be replacing the kitchen with.. so here are some "sample swatches" to give you a feel for the new kitchen. |
