Thoughtful Motherhood - Household Notebooks/ Home Management Binders

Sep. 25, 2007 - Household Notebooks/ Home Management Binders
Posted in Homemaking

For those of you who use Household Notebooks, I have a few questions?

-is this your only planner?

-do you use a portable planner or what do you carry in your purse?

-is every aspect of your life in the household notebook?

I need to get/make a planner, but I'm not sure what kind.  I need something for to-do lists, calendar, projects list.  I need to incorporate homeschool, writing deadlines, everyday living, church activities, hubby's activities, etc.

So, is it possible to organize all of that into one planner?  Or do I have to have planner for each thing (homeschool, writing, household/everyday).

Sorry I have no answers for you, as I ask the same questions myself! For years I have been on the search for the "perfect planner". As it is now, I have some info in my cell phone, some info on Google Calendar (which I always forget to update and check) and some info on my computer. Of course my computer crashed and I lost all that. I feel lost in a sea of disorganization yet at the same time I am addicted to organization.
Personally, I don't do well with a big home management notebook, because it always gets lost under library books and paperwork. I'd like a separate one for my purse/diaper bag for when I'm out of the house, but then again I always forget to update it. I'm beginning to think I need to go back to FlyLady.
Anyway, this probably doesn't help you a bit, does it?! Just be sure to let me know if you come across the "perfect" system!
Blessings ~ Diane

I don't know how to create an actual link in comments, sorry! Getting read to put one of these babies together myself. www.organizedhome.com also have information on binders. (Actually I think these sites are run by the same woman.)

Well you saw mine....just do that...it can be in a big binder for just using at home or make it in one of the more portable binders (may require trimming printed 8.5x11 pages to fit) and then it's portable ... or you could have a big one for home and a little one with like a schedule and other things you'd need if not at home.....so you could put one together based off my pictures but in my state I have my homeschool records in its own binder because we have to keep a portfolio, if we didn't then I could put our homeschool logs and lesson plans and samples in the HMB.

also this is where I learned to put mine together
keepingthehome.com (who has 4 kids and you can see her master schedule) and don't forget flylady can help put together what she calls a control journal or I know many a person in real life that like those franklin covey planners (spelling?)

also I have my schedule just printed and magneted on the fridge, we're not always right on time, but it helps map out a flow for the day.

I like the Keepers at Home planner. I think you can use it for just about anything and it's easy to supplement. I added planner pages that I found on other sites (i.e. www.donnayoung.org or http://www.chasesc.com/forms.html#5 ). You can read a reviw of this planner here : homeschooling.about.com/cs/productreviews/fr/keepersathome.htm and you can order here : home.earthlink.net/~cmautry/keepers/products.html

We were at borders the other day and saw these nifty little household, family type planners. Now, while I wouldn't necessarily recommend buying one - as it doesn't provided areas for certain things you are interested in....they definitely have some neat ideas as far as visuals for schedules, calendars, etc.
P.S. Love you and am excited for you

Hi MJ,

I use my Household planner for almost *everything* - recipes, menus, homekeeping and homeschool schedules, homeschool records, vaccination cards (even the ones for the cats) - however, I *also* have a daily planner that I carry in my purse and I put all appointments and "to do" things that have deadlines in that. Since my purse always goes with me, I can immediately schedule new app'ts at the OB's office, etc, or make plans with friends.

Sep. 27, 2007 - I use one notebook

It holds all our homeschool and household routines, my phone list, a freebie calendar I 3-hole punched (No Greater Joy's, as a matter of fact), our book lists, my weekly menus, etc.

I don't have a good system for when I'm out and about. I just try to remember and write things down on my calendar when I get home.

The notebook definitely still needs some tweaking.

I had a really large 3 ring notebook 6" I think, but it was to much to lug from place to place. I now use a 1 inch binder. Type in homemaking binders in google and you will find plenty of neat blogs with pictures and all.

About Me

I'm an almost ordinary mom. I'm a bit quirky in my tendency toward conspiracy theory and activism. I shout at the tv, which drives my hubby crazy. I was once a single mom of one son and God redeemed me with an amazing husband who loved us both. Later, God took my barren womb and knit together three little men in two and half years, and then shocked the stuff out of us knitting together a little lady. This blog is totally random, following the trends that only occur in my mind. My biggest aim is to live my life more joyfully and more thoughtfully.
