Giving the Government Authority

A court in San Francisco has ruled against the constitutional right of parents to direct the upbringing and education of their children.  “[We] hold that there is no fundamental right of parents to be the exclusive provider of information regarding sexual matters to their children, either independent of their right to direct the upbringing and education of their children or encompassed by it.”

This had to do with public school parents whose children took a survey that had sexual questions on it.  The parents signed a permission slip, but were not aware of the extreme nature of some of the questions.  So, they sued the school.  I agree that they should be upset...but...

When you give the government authority over your children for 6-8 hours a day, why are you surprised when they abuse that authority.  It is the parent's fault for putting their children under someone else's authority in the first place.  When did the goverment's job description include raising children and passing down morals and values.  Doesn't our government have enough on its plate without having to provide an education and supervision for our children.  Parents, don't come crying when the government schools expose your children to something you don't approve of.  You gave the government the right to do that when YOU enrolled your child in public school.

I just wrote about this in my blog, too. I still find it appalling whenever I think about it. Yes, it did cement in my mind that we would be homeschooling our boys. But I'm appalled for those parents in the inner city, like so many who live around me, who really don't have a choice to homeschool.
