May. 19, 2006 - You have my prayers
Posted by authorDonna

Having raised an asthmatic, an epileptic and a child with a shocked immune system and central auditory processing disorder, you have my prayers. As a matter of fact, I'll offer them now.
Dear Father,
Thank you for this family. I lift them up to you and ask that you give them an extra measure of strength for each day. Lord, sometimes children with special needs can take just that extra bit of energy and I ask that you pour that energy down on these parents for the years ahead. Thank you for blessing them with your precious gifts--children--and for the desire to hometeach. Give them a great day today as they teach those children to love you. In Jesus' name. Amen.
Have a great weekend.

I don't have an account w/ your other blog so I couldn't comment there, so I am commenting here. First let me say thank you for writing all about Tink!! Sometimes I feel like no one could possibly understand what it is like to be screamed at and cried at so many times a day!! LOL
I am going to keep reading and when you learn something, please post it. It might work for me too!

Being too lazy to register(so I can comment) at your real blog, I continue to comment here, I hope you don't mind! ;)
You have blessed me so by writing about Tink and I also loved when you wrote that the presence of company makes you see how messy things really are. I thought I was the only one who when someone comes over, all of a sudden I start noticing stuff~!
Needing a break is part of the reason I sent ds to school. He(like myself, too!) acts better in public. I don't know if there will come a time when he feels comfortable at school and starts crying or yelling.
Today he didn't know what his homework assignment was...so I emailed the teacher, left a phone message, but it is almost time for bed and haven't heard from him, so he is going to go back to school w/out doing it. He hates that, but I don't know what else to do.
Plus I don't have it all together and am using this time to take care of some medical needs on my part and catch my 6th grade up to where I'd like him to be academically.
I try not to think too much about the future, but live in the present. It is so hard for me not to try and figure things out. I also recently joined a yahoo group for sensory dyfunction support. I am still lurking there, but it is good reading.
Just wanted to touch base w/ you. I enjoy knowing you are out there!

Susan I cannot tell you how thankful I am that I can be of help to you. Once my homeschool starts again in September there will be all new articles on Tink. Right now she pretty much is left to her own devices. When school starts so does the resistance!
Hang in there. You can do this! Hugs!

Having fun things during the school day that the other kids aren't getting to do. Sleeping late, eating out or having a special treat or field trip, etc...And staying positive, matter of fact about hsing. I just joined a yahoo group that I am getting some good info from. There are LOTS of parents going thru the same things, I just never knew it!

I am the opposite over here, knowing we needed the change of sending ds to school, and yet being sad about it! Knowing full well that weeks before I was depressed because I was homeschooling and desperately needed a break!!
Review your archives and don't expect perfection, have some hobbies/downtime for you.Just because you are doing God's will, it may not be easy or fun.
You know, we "all" agree w/ you that you are right to homeschool her.

You will eventually stumble onto something that calms Tink when she gets overstimulated. For our son, it is the brushing, it cures everything!! LOL And if we are in the car or some place like that, I find that if I just stop talking to him and let him ramble, he will eventually settle down because I am not adding fuel to the fire. I too, am working on scheduling and making the environment a success for him...sigh... it is hard!!
I will say that there are strengths that come w/ it too though. That is the fun part, the lighter side of it. My son is very logical and sees patterns everywhere(math is getting fun for him) and can build anything...he gets to be the best at something for once!
Blessings on you and your girl!!

I love your candor, how you don't like your children to be idle, the crafts that they do, the nature walks, your tenacity...
A book I found very helpful is "Teaching reading to children w/ down syndrome". I bought it on amazon for $12. Before my son went to school we were doing it and he loved it. You start w/ sight words that are of high interest to the child. Once you build up a sight word vocab of 100 or so words, the memory is built up enough to teach phonics. And no the child doesn't have to have downs syndrome to use the book.
Hope you don't mind me saying this, or other comments from time to time;it's not that I expect you to run out and buy this, I am just SO HAPPY to be having a conversation w/ someone about all this!!!!!

Well I actually might run out and by that book. Lol It sounds like a good one. If you go to my sidebar on Dishpan Dribble you will see a blog called Notes from the Cookie Jar. That lady also has a son with a sensory disorder. Her husband has it too! I think you would also be able to relate to her posts.

That is me thrusting my hand in the air for you to call on me!!
I highly recommend taekwondo. Very good for kids in occupational therapy.
I am SO with you. I need friends and so does my one homeschooled son. It is very lonely.
BTW LOVED the cookie jar blog. I laughed out loud a LOT while reading it. Her son is in school too.
And when I do homeschool again, you might be pleased to know I am going to copy you as much as possible!!! I see a lot of good things goin on over there!!!!!

Well I certainly get it. I was thinking last night that you are good at knowing how to not get her worked up. You are catching on a lot faster than I am.
I don't have any good advice because I have been letting my dh do his homework w/ him. They are very similar personalities. I share your dream to have fun school learning experiences.
It does seem to help to talk about it in a calm moment about what he thinks would work better for next time.
There are colors that bother my ds. Can't you just hear "You KNOW that color makes me sick!!!"" LOL
The other night we went out to eat at a steak house. "I hate this place! It's cold in there! And there's animal skins on the walls!! I get SICK lookin at that while I EAT!!! We sat out in the car til he finally came around. I just kept saying "We don't have to go in.We can wait out here for them to finish eating."
"But I don't WANT to wait out here!!!"
I really wanted him to make his own choice and deal w/ the consequence. Finally I am starting to take charge instead of falling into the argument w/ him.
He finally calmed down and we decided he would sit where he couldn't see the walls, would take his food home to eat and just have a drink. He turned out fine, but the other kids took up where he left off. It seems they want to enjoy special privileges too now that we are trying to accomodate Edmund more.
You know what really helped? When I read about Tink having ODD, I thought well it wouldn't hurt to read up on it, it might have some helpful ideas for me. I don't think that ds has it, but the techniques sure helped me!!!!

I admire your ability to stay one step ahead. I don't seem to realize the issues until I've been looking at them for a while.
