Swashbuckling Sans Pirates

We had a noisy morning.  As I sat on the sofa and nursed the baby, my other two youngest boys (4 and 1) were swashbuckling:  yelling loudly, brandishing swords, and jumping off things (namely, our cast-iron and limestone coffee table). They were having a grand time, and I was laughing while I watched them.

If you have read my posts on children's appetites and training children in idolatry, you'll know where I'm going with this:  What's up with all the pirate stuff?  Why do parents mindlessly let children play pirates? Pirate birthday parties, pirate toys, pirate books and coloring books, pirate costumes, and even pirate ship playgrounds.  Since when are pirates cute or fun?  Pirates are criminal!  In real life, pirates murder, steal, rape, pillage, drink, and who knows what else (need I list more?).  If we encourage our children to imitate pirates and enjoy "being a pirate," what message are we sending?

Sigh.  Parents, we must be mindful.

I can scratch the surface a little bit deeper, if you like.  Read on, if you dare:

What about dinosaurs?  Have you thought about the caution and discernment you must use if your little one LOVES dinosaurs? (And no, I'm not talking about creation vs. evolution.)  First of all, how did he come to love them?  Was he trained to think they were cool and interesting, and then pushed on him because it's normal for little boys to love them?  Why is it normal?  Because that's just what little boys like?  Does he have dinosaur pajamas, dinosaur toys, dinosaur bedding, dinosaur underwear? Is there not a fine line between love of dinosaurs to the love of lizards, snakes, frogs, and other such creatures?  And, how easy is it to take an interest in dragons when they are so much like dinosaurs?  What types of things are associated with dragons? Is Satan dulling our senses so we don't even recognize him for what he is?

I'm not saying ban dinosaurs from your house--that's ridiculous.  I'm saying, "Parents, we must be mindful."  God created dinosaurs. We can be in awe--of the Creator, not the creature.  We should not mindlessly fill our children's hearts and minds with the "creature" instead of the Creator.

What about horses? Dogs? Cats? Frogs? Fish? Rabbits? Have you encouraged an unhealthy obsession or idolatry with a particular type of animal based on your child's interests?  How often do we decorate our children's rooms with horses, or sea creatures, or some other "love." How much have we contributed to or encouraged silly collections (pigs, panda bears, giraffes, blah, blah, blah...), telling everyone how much they LOVE that animal?

I'm not saying ban animals.

We should teach our children to appreciate and admire all the wonders of God's creation. We should study, learn, observe, and enjoy.

But, we must be mindful.

Are we teaching our children to worship the Creator or the created? Are we filling their hearts and minds with the Creator, or the created?

And back to the swashbuckling.  Who are we allowing our children to "worship" as heroes?  This time last year, I was not letting my boys follow after Superman, or Spiderman, or any other such superhero. I never have.  But I don't think I thought much about my little boys owning a pirate coloring book, or wearing a plastic eye patch while clashing swords. But God is gracious and continues to grow our family.  Now I think quite a lot about it.

Swords are great fun and can be quite manly, valiant, and noble.

Pirates are none of these things.  I don't care how Hollywood spins it, or how cute the birthday party package is--treasure chest cake and all.

Parents, we must be mindful. The world is everywhere, waiting to claim our children through the most "innocent" of fun.

Let's keep our eyes on our Creator and with all our hearts strive to glorify Him, especially with how we train our children!  For of such is the kingdom of God!

Blessings and prayers to you all,
Mrs. E

Aug. 19, 2009 - ...and princesses too

Posted by Anonymous
This post reminds me to think about how much my daughter's age group (6 years old) is bombarded by princess this and princess that. I believe, as a child of God, she is His princess, as He is her King. That's where it stops. I must remind myself how worldly princesses are related to Kings and Queens and how they believe in Divine Right to rule over others and the wrongness of it all. Thank you for your post today.

God Bless,

M.

The good thing is that unless you've allowed your child to watch hollywood trash, then the only thing they know about pirates is that they are bad guys with swords. These kinds of people are in the Bible, too.

Aug. 21, 2009 - Swashing and Buckling

I know exactly what you mean dear sister! I have 3 boys and 3 girls. Only the swashbuckling that occurs in my own home is lego reenactments of star wars. A few years ago the Lord had been telling me to get the leaven out of my house. At first I thought that the message must have been for someone else, but the Holy Spirit urged me more. Everyone in my house got sick! 7 people down and I had no symptoms. I began to think and remember what the Lord said. Get the Leaven out! So, I got a trash bag(abig black one) and began repenting of romantic movies I had, and then cursing movies, and then Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars etc. When I got finished the bag was full! I thought, I'll just leave it here in the middle of the floor for now. But the Holy Spirit urged "Get it out of the House!" So, I went to the back door and threw it in the back yard. When I came back in every one of the family who had been asleep and very ill, all got up and said they felt better! At the same time! Wow! I want to continue to hear the Holy Spirit! I confess I don't always listen as closely as I used to.

I pray for you and praise the Lord for your ministry to us ladies on your blog! Thankyou! Oh how I wish I could talk with you sometimes! But instead I just think maybe I should pray. He is who I need to talk to in times of my weaknesses. Thankyou for being a witness!

Hello again. I hope you don't mind that I am writing you again! I had the same thoughts on the little mermaid and all the other disney characters. I already have to battle the "princess attitude" in one of my little twin girls. I don't need help from disney to tell her that it is okay to defy me. Funny.
The barbie dolls were put in the garbage about 6 years ago as well.
I carefully let my girls read and sometimes watch the american girl doll books and movies. Very quick for my husband and I to point out the feminism and liberalism out to them, including the 3 boys if they happen to be nearby. I don't want them to be snookered into thinking girls and women should act like that.
Our whole family enjoyed very much just last week a movie on Jeremiah. My husband noted and reread Jeremiah to share with us any thing that was not in the Bible. But over all the movie pointed out that listening to God is so important, even if it means surrendering to the enemy. We also enjoyed a movie about King Solomon. These were up to date actors and screen photography. We were able to find these dvds at our library. It was about 5 videos... Esther, Solomon, Jeremiah, Jesus, and I think David. I wish I could remember the actual title on the cover.
Right now our family is praying for the Lord's direction on a vehicle. My husband's transmission in his truck is totally gone. And we don't want to jump into truck payments without true direction from the Lord.
I think you are doing so well to have lost 8 pounds! I can't seem to get through the day with out thinking of eating bread, now that I have to avoid it for 20 more days.
My umbilical hernia seems to be doing better. I have one of those belts too.
My oldest son is to be baptized tomorrow! I am so excited for him!
Thank you for commenting and thanks for praying. I will keep praying for you as well. Every day at 11:00 a.m.
