Busy...

Posted in My Random Adventures • Apr. 8, 2008
April seems to start the really really busy season for us.  I volunteer with a community foundation, and we have our major fundraising event of the year this weekend.  It is an American Girl Fashion Show and involves about 600 girls, 6 shows, 2000 attendees, and A LOT of work!  I was busy with the rehearsals and prep last weekend, and I will be practically living there from Friday through Sunday.  Also, Violet's dance recital is in early May , horse show season is about to start, and the kids' choir spring musical is coming up fast.  Our Co-Op goes through May, and I have lots of planning to get done and turn in for next year.  On top of the usual routine and Mr. Incredible's job search, it is getting crazy here fast!

This morning, I am getting a little time with a quiet house, because Mr. Incredible took the little Incredibles to the zoo!  I need to get menu planning, grocery list, budget, and bills done and also go grocery shopping and clean the house.  Anyone want to make a bet on how much I will get done in the short time they are gone?  (I may be Mrs. Incredible, but I am not THAT good!)

Let's just hope it all gets done at some point, so I can go on the the other 9,999 things that I need to do before Friday!

Have a blessed day!

My name is Elastigirl, and I'm addicted to Webkinz...

Posted in My Random Adventures • Oct. 26, 2007
OK, so we have not had the most productive week in the world.  We have had a pretty good week school-wise, but the house is a disaster and my meal plan went downhill in a hurry.

Why?

It's Webkinz Fall Festival time!  And after my friend Mary Poppins clued me in on the leaf hunt game, I got hopelessly addicted to sitting in front of my computer waiting for a colored leaf to blow by so I could click on it and get a prize.  My kids are addicted, I am addicted, even little Jack-Jack sits next to me saying, "Find leaf, Mommy!  FIND LEAF!"

Yes, I am a nerd.  But I know this:  I am not a lone nerd.  I think I know more Moms and Dads that play webkinz than kids!!!  If you are one of them, let me know your user name and I will add you as my friend.  Who knows?  You may even get a fall present from me... after obsessively clicking on all those leaves, I have quite a lot of autumn bounty to share!

Here are my Webkinz having a party today while they wait for a leaf to blow through the room.

OK, so now you know how nuts I am!

Finding Nemo...

Posted in My Random Adventures • Jun. 3, 2007
I know this blog is *supposed* to be about the Incredibles, but I am just bursting with joy over this story, and I HAVE to let it out somewhere!  So, since it *IS* my blog, here goes:

"Finding Nemo"
Once upon a time, there was a the sweetest, cutest little fishie named Nemo.  Nemo had a problem:  he needed a family.  Nemo lived in a school of fish where there were some very nice grownups who took care of him, but sometimes late at night, Nemo would lie in his little bed and wish that he could have a mommy and a daddy all his own.  Beyond that, though, Nemo had a secret wish... that when he got his family, it woul dbe a family that had a sister just for him.  Nemo had always wanted a big sister to love him and take care of him, who would play with him and smile at him and make him giggle.

One day, the grownup fishies who took care of Nemo gave him a picture of a family.  They said, "Nemo, this is a picture of the family who is coming to get you.  They are going to be your very own family, but you will have to wait a while to see them."  Nemo looked at the picture.  There was a beautiful mommy with lovely, long hair , big brown kind eyes full of love, and a kind smile.  There was a daddy who looked like he would take very good care of Nemo no matter what.  Nemo liked the tiny hint of mischief in his eyes, thinking that he would be a lot of fun to play with!  And..... best of all, there was... a LITTLE GIRL!  A SISTER!  She looked just like Nemo had dreamed her.  She had big, beautiful eyes and a great big smile.  She looked ready to play!  Nemo loved them right away.  He wouldn't wait to see them, for them to be his.... but how long would he have to wait?

Oh, for two year old Nemo, it seemed like forever!  Then one day, Nemo turned three.  And then another year, and it was close to Nemo's fourth birthday.  Still he dreamed about them and wondered, would they ever come?

Meanwhile, across the world, the family in the picture was longing for Nemo!  They had many pictures of him, even a couple video clips of him playing.  They had been waiting to be able to get him so long.  every day, his mommy and daddy and his big sister prayed for Nemo, that he would be safe and healthy, and that they would be able to go to get him soon.  But, sometimes deep down, they wondered if the day would ever come when they would be allowed to travel to find Nemo and bring him home.

Just a couple weeks before Nemo's fourth birthday, the news came to Mommy and Daddy: They would be able to go get Nemo soon!  They flew into action, and travel was set up for just after Nemo's birthday!  All of their friends and family got so excited, that they decided to have a great  big "birthday party" for Nemo to shower his family with gifts for Nemo so that he would have everything he needed when he got home!

The day to travel finally came, and Nemo's family traveled across the world.  When they got to Nemo's town, the grownup fishies met them... and they were surprised to see a sweet, shy, cute little fishie with a very familiar face there too... it was NEMO!  They had found him!

Nemo loved them right away.  His mommy and daddy were everything he had hoped for, and his sister was even more so!  She was so loving and kind, fun and giggly, and took such good care of him that Nemo's heart was fairly bursting with joy.... and the feeling was mutual on her part!

The next few days passed quickly as they took time to get to know each other and play together.  then they got to go finish the paperwork, and Nemo was officially part of their family!  They had a very rocky time getting home, because Mommy, Daddy and Big Sister got sick on the way and Nemo was very nervous, but they made it home.

Tonight, Nemo is going to bed (what else... his Nemo bed in his Nemo room!) in his new home with his new family.  He has a forever family, and they have a forever boy.  And their friends the Incredibles could not be happier for them (or more impatient to meet Nemo!)  :)

And they all lived happily ever after.

Congratulations to Chocolateer (whose name on my blog will forevermore be Mary Poppins, because I think she is "practically perfect in every way" ), the Jedi, and Sweetling on Finding their little Nemo!

So what did you think?

Posted in My Random Adventures • Oct. 24, 2006

If you are still among those few who are checking my blog at this point, what did you think?
a.  I dropped off the face of the earth

b.  I must have a lot going on

c.  I sounded like I was getting overwhelmed, and you were thinking I might have been on the verge of a breakdown of some kind

d.  I joined the superhero relocation program and had to thus abandon this blog.

Well, a.  I did not, in fact, drop off the face of the earth.  b.  I do have quite a bit going on, of which I will try and update you as I can here. c.  I have been very overwhelmed with things, yet I did not and do not plan on haing a breakdown... I just, in fact, needed to remember that I am, indeed, Elastigirl, and I can be f-l-e-x-i-b-l-e... right?  d.  Still here, no relocation program yet ;)

I believe my overwhelmedness brought on a bad case of writer's block, which kinda stunk because, after all, I do love y'all and I love blogging.  So, in the spirit of not sweating stuff so much, I am just going to start writing a little here, even if it is about nothing, cause, hey, after all... it's just my blog... it's not like it has to be Incredible or anything!      ...right?

Sunday night...

Posted in My Random Adventures • Oct. 8, 2006

Every Sunday is a chance to start a new week, and each week I vow to perfect myself/ my house/ my kids/ my life by this time next week.  I make all these plans, but of course by sometime after dinner things have usually gone awry already!  Still, I am the eternal optimist, and so I repreat the ritual of revamping my life every week on Sunday.  Just thought you should know that about me.

overwhelmed...

Posted in My Random Adventures • Oct. 5, 2006

I am way overwhelmed with things to do at the moment.  I am burning the candle at both ends, giving up sleep, and still coming up a day late and a dollar short in everything.  I have already cut the number of commitments to a bare minimum, and all the things I am doing are things my family really needs... things like cooking, cleaning, menu planning, etc, plus kids, school, and home business (which is truly a need in our situation to keep me from having to work outside the home.)

I figure other people do this and much much more, I must be missing some important bone or gene or chromosome or something, because I just can't seem to get on top of it all, ever!

Maybe I should do the wife swap thing with the condition that whoever comes to my house has to whip it into organization while they are here! LOL!

Speaking of that, I will do the tag soon!  Looks fun!

I need your help with a fun idea!

Posted in My Random Adventures • Sep. 19, 2006

Calling all you wonderfully creative moms out there.. I need some help!   As you may know, I am a Creative Memories Consultant.  We just got a new product called a StoryBook that is really cool... basically, you sit in front of your computer and pop your digital photos into these really awesome templates, and then you can write anything you want in any font you want to go along with it...then they send you a book, like a children's book only a lot nicer.

My problem?  I want to make a book to show my clients what they look like.  But I am having a problem choosing what kind of book I want to do first!  I have heard of people doing ABC books for their kids where each page has a different letter,  I saw one that had pictures with very cool quotes, it was for a husband with pics of him and his wife, kids, dad, etc.  My friend did one of her outdoor adventures.  I have also seen some where people put pictures with song lyrics or poems.  All of those ideas sound really cool, and I have thought of more too... so I need some help!

What creative ideas can you think of that would be neat for me to do?  I would LOVE to hear your ideas, whether you have read my blog a long time and have specific ideas that you think fit my family, or whether you just have generally cool ideas.  Just tell me your ideas, because I want to get this book ordered this week to be able to share at my next big event!

Thanks!

An Incredible Morning

Posted in My Random Adventures • Sep. 17, 2006

Life around here has been in full swing now that we are back into our activities, and I am pushing my schedule a bit for my business to reach some high goals I have set for this fall.  I will post some pics soon of our fall activities, we are really enjoying ourselves, but we are busy!  So I have not been on the computer a lot, but I will blog as I can, at least several times a week... but don't count on every day for a while!

I have SO much to share!  But, for the sake of this post, I am going to focus on this morning.  As I have shared before, Mr. Incredible has a part-time gig as a workship leader.  So, Sunday morning get ready for church time is a solo gig for me... a solo gig complicated by the fact that the church where he leads worship is not our home church (meaning he just got a job there but we were not a part of the church before that and we have not left our church we call home).  So, I try to get everybody ready and out the door to go where he leads worship and then when he is done we caravan to our church from there.  It makes for a very, very long morning for all of us.

This morning, I started getting everyone ready over an hour before we had to go.  And yet, 5 minutes after the ABSOLUTE deadline to leave, Violet was looking for a piece of her chosen outfit which she had not informed me was missing, and then 10 minutes later after she changed and got in the car, Dash unbuckled his carseat that I had buckled him in and moved up into the center row of seats while I was getting Jack-Jack in.  By this time, the service starts in 5 minutes and we are still 30 minutes away, not to mention getting boys in the nursery, etc.  And I turn around and just scream LOUD at Dash, "GET IN YOUR SEAT!  NOW!"

And he starts crying.

And it suddenly dawns on me what I am modeling: do whatever you have to do, rush everybody you love around and push them, make them feel bad if they forget something or lose something or have a delay, yell at them and use an angry tone if you have to, but GET THEM TO THE CHURCH ON TIME AT ANY COST!

Well, the clenched-teeth "WE ARE GOING TO WORSHIP THE LORD, &*$#@*!" philosophy just does not fly with me, and I have never wanted to be that way.  So, I stopped yelling and just stopped.  I looked at Dash and just said, "I am sorry.  I am sorry I yelled at you.  That was not kind or honoring, and in our family I want us to be kind and honor each other even when we are frustrated."  Then I apologized to Violet for pushing her along and making her feel bad about losing the piece of her outfit.  I told her that yes, she is responsible for keeping her outfits together and planning ahead, but that because she is seven, I am responsible for helping her learn how to be organized and plan ahead and I blew it on that count.

And then I decided we were not going to go to the first church today.  I told the kids calmly and joyfully that I wanted us to have a wonderful morning and that they could get out of the car and play until it was time to go to our home church.  I went back inside, nursed jack-Jack and put him down for the morning nap he has to skip in order to make it to the first church service, and then put on some worship music and cleaned my house.  I figured it was an act of service for my family, especially for my husband who has to run around so much on Sundays and then go back to his "real job" on Monday bright and early.  I sang, prayed and thought a lot as I worked, and worked through some pretty deep heart issues with God while my two older children played perfectly with not one fight (which is saying something lately).   Then we got in the van an hour and a half later and headed off to meet Daddy at our church, happy and prepared to worship.  The worship service this morning was simply incredible.  It touched my heart deeply and really connected me with the Lord.  Was that because of my heart prep time while cleaning or not?  Don't know, but I am glad I didn't keep on going with my half crazed, joyless and frustrated attitude and push my children around all morning.

I have long felt that satan wants our Sunday morning to be terrible and full of fighting because if he cannot keep us out of church, he will at least work to make it a miserable experience for all involved and rob us of love, joy, and peace on our families and hearts.  I am very glad to say that for this one day, his plan did not work in our home.  It was one Incredible morning !  :)

A day in the (crazy) life...

Posted in My Random Adventures • Aug. 24, 2006

On the lighter side of life today....

I got a call from my homeschool group leader.  She wants me to do a workshop at the meeting called "A Day in the Life" where I just tell what a typical day is like at my house/ homeschool.

OK, so that should be a very informative and helpful workshop to attend, should it not?  In preparation, I thought I would jot down some things from today in our life:

* I awake to Dash yelling, "I want some juice!"

* Changed Jack-Jack's diaper... uh-oh, we are having major diaper rash issues here.

* About 30 seconds after awaking, Violet begins to ask, "When are we leaving for Chicago?"  (side note: we are leaving tomorrow to go visit the newlywed sister and her new hubby, and Violet is spending her long and hard-earned savings at the American Girl store on the doll she has wanted for almost a year..)

*You can ditto that last comment approximately 10,598 times because it has been a steady refrain coming from Violet all day... it is now 2:30 p.m. and I am looking to officially hit the 1 millionth time for that question before we leave in the morning.

*Dash went back to his room to get dressed, couldn't find clothes he liked, energed naked from his room and proceeded to play in the buff for the next half hour.

*Dash has a new saying: he says in a REALLY funny voice, "I love you man!" mimicking the way daddy says it... it is HILARIOUS.

* I decide Dash needs some clothes on an go back to help him dress.  Here is the conversation:  Me:  "Hold still, you have somthing in your hair."  (I get it out.)  Him: "What was it, Mommy?  A racoon or something?"  What cracks me up is not only that he thought it might be a raccoon, but the "or something" he adds to the end of a lot of his sentences.  He is one funny dude.

* So then the two big kids go outside, by which time Jack Jack has energed from his morning nap and Violet has questioned whether she can begin packing at least 64,863 times.

* They are outside nearly 2 minutes before the screaming begins.  They are not getting along.  So I make them come inside. Dash runs, and I go get him and put him in time out.

*Things get interesting here... after plunking Dash in the time out chair, I realize something.... I cannot find Jack-Jack.  (who is just newly one, btw)  I call out his name (which is not Jack-Jack, although he answers to that too by now LOL!), but no answer.  One kid has left the basement door open... the unpardonable sin in our house.  With a panicked feeling I go look at the bottowm of the stairs... no Jack-Jack.  Whew.  I start looking in all the disasterous areas (toilet, tub, etc)  while Violet, who has now caught on, and Dash, who is just kinda along for the ride and needs an excuse to get out of time out while mama is otherwise occupied, call out "Jack-Jack!  Jack-Jack!"  (well, not really, but his real name)  And I still can't find him, then I hear his little voice... over in the corner.  I go over and see...a little boy, just one year old, with a mouth stuffed full of cookie, and his hand caught in the cookie jar (actually a box, but jar sounds better)... what a little piggie piggie!

* I am now very short on time, as it is really really late and we are leaving in the morning and I am not packed for everyone yet (you have to take the whole house with you when you leave with three kids for two days!).  So for the sake of wrapping it up, the rest of the day involved putting kids down for nap, cleaning, doing errands, packing, putting kids to bed, laundry, cleaning, packing, more laundry and now printing out trip stuff.

Thus ends a day in my Incredible life!

who is VERY excited to go visit my sister and new brother-in-law!

Mrs. Incredible is trapped...

Posted in My Random Adventures • Aug. 21, 2006

under piles of papers!  True confession time:  When I was being put together, I got in the line for the superpowers and missed the one for the organizing gene...I am a complete and total hopeless mess when it comes to dealing with the reams of paper that come into my home.

I really don't understand it.  I throw out the junk mail as soon as it comes, but still there are piles of paper everywhere!  Ususally they just mount up big enough for me to throw them in a box when I get sick enough of looking at them.  Then of course, if I need a piece of paper I just know I have somewhere, I have to go through all the piles and all the boxes, and well, you know, it is not so super.  I can sort through them all, throw them away, and organize them.  I have used many systems for organizing them, from outboxes, etc to files, and have read many "get organized" type books.  The problem, as I see it, is that I can't seem to find a system that I follow through with using on a consistent basis.  So it sends me back into piles eventually.

To be fair, the problem is not all me.  I have papers for home life, money stuff, and kids activities plus a very active homebased business as well.  And my papers are VERY fertile.  They have babies while I am sleeping... lots of babies.

I know you SuperMoms out there have systems that work for you, and I would LOVE your ideas... SO HELP!

If I don't get a system I can work with soon, my tombstone is going to read, "Here lies Mrs. Incredible, buried in her paperwork."  And my biography will have to be titled, "Buried Alive."

My mad lib

Posted in My Random Adventures • Aug. 21, 2006

Jessica is having a fun mad libs contest on her blog, so here is mine in hopes that I win! :)

Old Mother Hubbard went to the putty
To get her wiggly platypus a bone.
When she got there, the bubblegum was kissable

And so her ooky dog had none.

Jack and Jill went up the turnstyle
to fetch a/an garbage can of water.
Jack fell down and broke his flag,
And Jill came tumbling after.

There was a little girl and she had a little curl
Right in the middle of her statue.
And when she was luminous, she was very, very itchy,
And when she was bad, she was nutty.

There was a lazy woman
who shot in a shoe.
She had so many whiskers
She didn't know what to do.

I am thinking about fall today...

Posted in My Random Adventures • Aug. 13, 2006

I don't really know why, since it is still hot and summery here.  Maybe it's the "Back to school" feeling, because I have curriculum on the brain.  Or maybe just because Violet started soccer already (which seems to happen earlier every year!)  I don't know why... but for me, fall means a change of menu that I like... bring on the soups, stews, and crockpot meals... yummy!  So, I thought in honor of a. thinking of fall and b. having absolutely NO blog topic ideas today, (LOL!), I will post a favorite recipe.  You have to try it!  I got this recipe from my sister and doctored it up a little bit, and it is SO good!  It is my standard "bring-a-meal-to-a-friend" recipe, because it makes enough for us and another family, too, and because it is so yummy.

Here it is:

Mrs. Incredible's White Bean Chicken Chili

1 Tablespoon Olive Oil

3  16 ounce cans Great Northern Beans

4 cups shredded cooked chicken breast

2 medium onions, chopped

4 cloves minced garlic

2  4 ounce cans chopped mild green chiles

2 teaspoons ground cumin

1 ½ teaspoon dried oregano

¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper

4-6 cups chicken broth/stock, depending on thickness desired

3 cups grated Monterey Jack cheese

1 16 oz sour cream

 salt and pepper

1.  Heat oil in large pot over medium high heat, add onions and cook until soft.

2.    Stir in garlic, chiles, cumin, oregano, and cayenne pepper and sauté 2 minutes.

 3. Add undrained beans and chicken stock, bring to boil.

4.  Reduce heat and add chicken.

5.    Stir and cook until heated through.  Add salt and pepper to taste.

6.    Add cheese & sour cream and stir in.  Remove immediately from heat.

Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!

Now it's your turn!  Share your favorite fall recipes with me!

I have been notified, and agree...

that was a bit of a rant before  (see below two posts), but I had fun with my list even though it was hard to pick those cds!

My peace offering for ranting is that I came up with a mix-cd you can take on your desert island trip, sort of a theme thing, if you will. You can make up this mix, then if you ever need it, you can grab it on your way out the door to go get stuck on that island Here are the songs on it:

"Songs You Need When Stuck on A Desert Island" by Mrs. Incredible
1. Message in a Bottle- the Police
2. Theme from Gilligan's Island
3. Beyond the Sea- George Benson
4. Soak Up the Sun- Sheryl Crow
5. Don't Worry, Be Happy- Bobby McFerrin
6. So Lonely- The Police
7. "Row, Row, Row Your Boat"- Traditional
8. Help!- The Beatles
9. Stairway to Heaven- Led Zeppelin
10. Rescue Me- Geoff Moore and the Distance
11. Fins- Jimmy Buffet
12. Theme from Jaws (just the shark two notes, to freak ya out)
13. Michael, Row the Boat Ashore- Traditional
14. Put Your Dreams Away- Frank Sinatra
15. All By Myself- Celine Dion

Hope that at least made up for the ranting and made you crack a smile:)

The 10 cds I would take if I were stranded on a desert island...

Posted in My Random Adventures • Aug. 2, 2006

This one's for you, Mamma1420!

OK, if I am stranded on a desert island, what 10 cds do I want with me?  Interesting question…. At first I just thought I should come up with my favorite 10 cds, but then after really thinking about it, I realized that if I was going to be stranded there, they would be the ONLY cds I would ever get to listen to again.  So I changed my list.

Before I disclose the list, I have a few things I must get off my chest.

1.  If I were really stranded on a desert island, I don’t believe I would have cds, a player, or electricity to play them on…. UNLESS it was a luxury desert island and I was just on house arrest or something, in which case the cds wouldn’t matter because I would still have my computer and the ability to download songs online should I get tired of the same old cds.

And 2.  If I were really stranded on a desert island, and there was nothing there (like on Survivor, I would not care about music.  I would care about getting off it or just dying, because I HATE roughing it!  (reference my various references around HSB about camping being outlawed)  The only way I would care about music is if it WAS a luxury desert island with all amenities, in which case see above for my plan.

Finally, 3.  In this day and age, I would not bother packing cds and a player… I would just grab an ipod/mp3 player- avoid the choosing, get more songs in a much smaller space so as to make room for more stuff to take to said island ;)

OK, now that I have that cleared up and gotten a little snotty , here’s the list:

  1. something Sting ( actually the whole list could be filled with just Sting, but that would be too boring for you, my reader)- so I will choose Fields of Gold, because it is a compilation, but with Sting there is just SO much music that is great that I would be constantly bummed out that I was missing so many great songs… not to mention “Message in a Bottle” from the Police days, because it just fits the desert island theme.
  2. Michael W. Smith- Worship
  3. Steven Curtis Chapman- Speechless
  4. Eric Clapton- 24 Nights
  5. Brian Setzer Orchestra- The Ultimate Collection
  6. Billy Joel- Greatest Hits (I know it’s 3 volumes, but I would rubber band them together.)
  7. Elton John- Greatest Hits 1970-2002
  8. Third Day- Offerings
  9. Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow... The Greatest Hits of Kenny Loggins (ok, so I know I will get teased about that one but let’s be real…Kenny Loggins writes the soundtrack for life. J
  10. Bruce Hornsby and the Range—The Way it Is

This was actually kind of stressful, having to narrow those choices!  There were like 30 on the original list!  Whew!  I am done, and I can honestly say that I hope I never have to go to a desert island and grab 10 cds to take with me for the rest of my life J

My notes for The Well-Educated Mind, Chapter 1 (for the Great Books Reading Partnership)

Posted in My Random Adventures • Jul. 31, 2006

My notes are very similar to what has already been said, so I will highlight just some of the most important points I personally gleaned:

1. The concept of a commonplace book, which women historically have used as a tool for developing their own minds by writing about what they were reading.

2. "A well-trained mind is the result of application, not inborn genius."- p.16..

3. "Today, as in Watts's own time, intelligent and ambitious adults feel that they're unprepared to tackle any course of serious reading." I can so relate to that feeling! I have been a total bookworm my whole life, and went to college on a National Merit scholarship, but I feel totally inadequate to tackle these big books in antiquated language.... almost like I am supposed to leave those for the real scholars, because I am "just a mommy" or something...and perhaps it is, as the author suggests, a result of my "indifferent education that didn't teach the basic skills needed for mature reading and writing." I found this passage comforting and helpful in beginning this course of study. When I get overwhelmed, I am just going to remind myself that all I am doing is reading intelligently, thinking about my reading, and talking to my friends about what I have discovered.

4. The idea that sustained, serious reading is at the center of the self-education project. Well, duh, you may say... but I think this point is extrememly salient when I think of how much information and"learning" we count on abridged articles or other media reports to provide for us.

5. The "how to begin" part.... I am uncertain as to my opinion on sticking to one list at a time. I can see clearly that for the purposes of educating oneself in the classics and for the purposes of this partnership, this limiting is necessary. However, I don't know that it will harm things or turn my brain into mush to read other books in my "spare time" (haha, I laugh just reading that phrase!) I may be missing the point totally, she may not be saying that you should not read anything else. But if she is, how is that even realistic? I am doing read-alouds with my daughter, and of course BLOGGING is reading.. hello? LOL! But, seriously, throughout my day I am collecting information, relaxing, and being entertained in a variety of ways and in little snippets of time. I realize that the onslaught of tv, radio, movies, magazines, newspapers, and websites probably creates the kind of chaos that German theologian Friedrich Schleiermacher describes: in fact, were Friedrich Schliermacher exposed to the kind of cacophany that a day holds for me, I daresay his brain might have exploded. ;) But, seeing as though that chaos is here to stay, I kind of fail to see how reading another book is going to create irreparable damage to my self-education beyond what tv, radio, blogging and the rest will. So I will probably set aside the time to read and study deeply just the one book that we are doing, along with the Bible, but will allow myself to read whatever else I want to pick up if I have time.

6. Having gone on that little rant above (sorry, please let me know if that sort of thing is frowned upon, as I have not done a post for the GBRP before).. I now balance with this: probably the most important point in the chapter from my point of view was the admonition of Lydia Sigourney that systematic reading is particularly important when we are dwelling so much on the contemplation of little things. I know that most of my reading material at the current time, probably due to my stage in life, focuses on the so-called "little things": homemaking, organization, homeschooling, menu planning, parenting, running a business, etc... not that those things are little in importance, but only meaning that they do not encourage deep and hard thinking very often...so I agree that I need a program of systematic reading like this! Also, the point about scheduling time to do it was very important.

7. OOH, this book makes me happy too! It feeds the voracious reader in me, the curious kid who wants to know everything! I, too, went on to chapter two- in fact, I read through the whole book! (tsk tsk, I could not help myself.) But, isn't that what Adler says to do anyway? ;)

I have now realized that some of my comments were pretty tongue-in-cheek and less than academically thought-provoking, but it is late and I am not going back to rewrite them. If you can see that I need more clear instruciton on how/what is appropriate to post, please feel free to let me know as I am new to this!

Also, my name is not listed to the side as a partner... please put me on there! :)
