Sep. 14, 2005 - Cell Model and Picasso Portraits

Finished our cell models today... (we added a bit more to it since the kids are mainly older)

Cell membrane ~ Ziplock Bag

Nucleus ~ grape

Cytoplasm ~ jello

Mitochondria ~ gummy pieces

Lysosomes ~ Jolly Rancher "Rocks"

Endoplasmic reticulum ~ Fruit roll ups cut into strips

Golgi Bodies ~ full gummy worms

The kids spent some time yesterday deciding on the "ingredients" for their cells what type of candy would make the best fit.  They had fun... and got a treat of having some candy which they very rarely get!

We also read some books about our bodies and how they change as we get older.  I realized that I kind of need to open up those lines of communication with the boys just like I did with Sprite when she was younger.  With the boys, it just didn't ever come up as naturally as it did with Sprite.  Anyway ~ Sprite read more easy-reader little kid type books about our bodies (where babies come from and whatnot since Abyni is our first child that didn't get to see anyone born!) and I went with the boys in the other room to discuss boy-things.  I figure I at least opened the subject, and let them know they can talk to me or daddy.

We also started with a new artist today ~ Picasso... always a fun one:  We used our oil pastels (the kds have been going nuts wanting to use them, but I made them wait until we had a school project to keep it special) and we did abstract-style portaits.  More cubism in some than really abstract, but at any rate, we now have a bunch of bright and colorful "FUN" looking portraits hanging in our bright kitchen!

We also did a bit of the normal stuff, copywork, short vocab review, math & reading.
