Oct. 6, 2005 - Memory Verses
We have a devotional (Devotions For Kids) that we have had for years ~ at this point, I basically use the index to look up topics and then find correlating verses to go with what we are studying (right now, the human body ~ Ps. 139:14, 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, etc.) and throw in verses about any character traits we may need to work on (Proverbs 17:22) and we discuss them, what they mean and how we can live them.
I also have the kids do their copywork, write down the verse on one card, where its found on the other... then after a few weeks of verses (one verse a week) we play memory, or other games ofthat nature. Also, to help them learn it, we write/draw out the verse (Such as A Merry Heart Does good like a medicine: We draw out a smiley face, a heart, a medicine bottle... etc) and the visual image helps them remember it better. One other way we use is to write it down on a white board, the kids take turn readng it outloud, while Abyni erases one or two words between each child's turn, until they're saying it from memory.
We've been doing one verse a week since August first, and the kids all know all the verses. We review each morning by letting each child pick a verse and tell where its found as well.
