Jan. 31, 2006 - Newspaper ideas...
I've been thinking about doing some sort of writing project with the kids (and I got really inspired with TOS magazine)
Anyway, they suggest doing a writing workship once a week with another family or two... sort of co-op style. I thought that might be really awesome... even every other week.
If not that, I've always wanted to have the kids "publish" a newspaper-style thing. Just a monthly thing they all contribute something to, get experience with different styles of writing, and update the grandparents/whatever. I was thinking this might be a neat thing to do with another family or two as well. Have the oldest kids (or most interested & capable) be the "editors" and be in charge of getting/assigning topics, etc. gathering the material and putting it together.
There could be a sports section to report on the most exciting games of the month, a cooking section with tips and a recipe, a drawing by the younger ones... a "headline" newstory that they could cover either a "real" current issue... or be creative and write a news story from something they learned in history as though it were current. There could be a devotional section, with a scripture and thoughts... I'm sure the kids can come up with plenty of ideas as well, as well they should, since it should be "their" thing!:)
I really want the kids to have a variety of writing experience, but it seems that they jsut aren't interested in writing just to put it in a folder and file it... I'm thinking this might be a good way to inspire them a bit. Now, just to find a family or two who is interested, available and whatnot.
If I could maybe find a couple of families, then we could occasionally do a writing workshop afternoon together and focus on one style of writing for a project or something. I'm not sure I know of anyone that would be interested/a good match age & interests wise... AND would be available... I've sent out a couple of emails to people I know who have similar ages to mine that I see often, so it wouldn't be a hardship to get together even long enough to gather "writing assignments"
Whatcha think?
