White Beauty was barely asleep at midnight when his keen ears picked up the sound of footsteps. His eyes popped open and when he saw who was walking toward him--Pete--his ears lay flat back on his head. Pete continued walking toward the horse, a mean grin on his grimy face, holding something behind his back. He climbed over the fence and drew the black whip out, then slapped the ground in front of Beauty's feet. He reared and whinnied as the whip continued to make him move backwards. Finally he was backed up against the fence and cornered. Pete cracked the whip again, but went a little too far and hit the horse's flank. A cry arose from the horse's throat as he bucked and began to gallop forward...

What a start!
