Review: Timez Attack and Living Math

Posted in Muse Reviews

I downloaded a new game to help ds#1 learn his multiplication tables.  It's called Timez Attack, and you can download the FREE base version, covering facts from 1 to 12, from http://www.bigbrainz.com/Download.html

It is a cool 3D graphics game.  You are a cute green alien that is stuck in a dungeon.  As you wonder around the dungeon you will encounter doors that light up with a multiplication problem and a pair if dice, one for each factor.  The dice come off the wall and turn into snails that you need to catch to turn them back into dice.  You throw the dice back at the door so the product is revealed and you can type it in on the door.  The door opens to reveal a giant monster with multiplication problems that appear on its belly.  You need to type in the correct product within the time allotted.  If you put in a wrong answer he shoots a torch-like device at you, and sometimes you fall down, but you can try again.  If you get several right, the monster disappears and a key appears, which you pick up to activate the next door.  Level 2 has 2 facts, level 3 has 3 facts, etc.  At the end of a level you complete a challenge with a large monster; you must demonstrate proficiency before you can move on to the next level.  It is an excellent way to drill multiplication tables!

I got this link from a message in a new Yahoo group I belong to called LivingMathForum.  I found that through the Living Math web site: http://www.livingmath.net/  This web site has extensive resources for teaching math--the literature list for living math books is huge!  So I joined the forum, and so far I'm glad I have.  This site fills my need for math literature, but the gaming section is good, not great.  I'd love a similar site geared towards homeschoolers regarding games...

"Heresy is from the Greek word meaning 'choice'.... But we are not permitted to believe whatever we choose, nor to choose whatever someone else has believed. We have the Apostles of God as authorities, who did not...choose what they would believe but faithfully transmitted the teachings of Christ. So, even if an angel from heaven should preach otherwise, he shall be called anathema."
