Language Arts spine--Primary and Intermediate Language Lessons

I really thought I was going to be without a good Language Arts spine for the fall until the folks on the Mater Amabilis Teacher Training forum talked about Emma Serl's Primary Language Lessons and Intermediate Language Lessons, both available in beautiful editions at Hillside Education.

The books were written in early 20th century America.  They contain a wonderful mix of instruction, picture study, narration, dictation, poetry, and composition broken down into many short oral and written lessons, enough to cover 2 to 4 years of instruction depending on how you use it.  The style is much more learning by doing rather than drilling on a concept.  Hillside's version is a beautiful color version, spiral bound, and updated, including a touch of Catholic content.  Straight reprints of both Primary Language Lessons and Intermediate Language Lessons are available through Amazon.

There's much more content compared to Simply Grammar, yet flexible enough to add in other sources and concepts with it--just like a good spine should be!

I use those with my kids! Love them. Actually Alex will just be beginning into Primary Lang. Lessons this year, he wasn't anywhere near ready until now.

About my photo of the mushroom/fungus....strangely enough no it never opened up into a cap of any kind! The night before it looked like a flower top with a mushroom stem and the next morning it looked like the photo. Weird! Then as quickly as it came, the next day it was gone.

July 13, 2008 - PLL vs ILL

Posted by MusingMom
When you get a new program, you never know how it is going to "flow" which makes planning difficult. I am more concerned about how ds#1 will do with ILL. I am glad I have both so I can bump him down if I need to.

The mystery "plant" has no chlorophil, so likely it is not a "plant" at all. Yet without a spore-filled cap it can't be a fungus, either. A lichen? Very interesting...

I'm hoping you can help. I would like to purchase ILL from Hillside, due to its updated format. However, we are not Catholic. Could you please tell me the extent to which Catholic content is found in this text? Examples are greatly appreciated.
Blessings,

July 24, 2008 - Catholic content

You will not find material relating to Marian theology or Catholic saints. The bible verses are from the Catholic Edition of the RSV. Some of the pictures and coversations have been changed from the original "in hopes of making the book more interesting to young readers." I don't know if this had anything to do with religious content; certainly none of the pictures are uniquely Catholic.

It is a beautiful, full-sized, spiral bound, color edition.

HTH!

"Heresy is from the Greek word meaning 'choice'.... But we are not permitted to believe whatever we choose, nor to choose whatever someone else has believed. We have the Apostles of God as authorities, who did not...choose what they would believe but faithfully transmitted the teachings of Christ. So, even if an angel from heaven should preach otherwise, he shall be called anathema."
