• Apr. 12, 2006 - Is it OK not to like the outdoors?

We went camping a week ago, and I finally figured out--I really don't like being outdoors!!!  (Mike says we've finally, after 16 good years, discovered we are incompatible!  He was rather stunned, I think.   He still loves me, don't worry :) )

There's bugs......
It's always too hot or too cold......
There are tons of hazards to watch out for with your kids, everything from falling off big rocks to rattlesnakes......
I got a dreadful sunburn, blisters and all.  I didn't much like the sun BEFORE. (OK, so I've always gotten sunburned, but this was through the sunscreen. Mike says I should be mad at the antibiotics I was on, not at the sun....... :)

OK, I'll stop complaining.   When I do go out, I do often enjoy myself. In fact, I did like this camping trip, overall.  I just prefer to drive through the country and look out the windows, that's all.

BUT, it seems in the homeschool community we have to have these wonderful nature walks, and I just don't like the outdoors.  I can't be the only one, can I?

• Apr. 14, 2006 - Brr, wasn't it cold?

Posted by higginszoo
We've had some nice DAYS, but I made the mistake of putting shorts on this morning and then went out to take care of some things in the yard. Brr!

I grew up in Scouts and did all of that then, but being responsible for 4 children in tow sure makes it a whole different experience, too, doesn't it?

I've committed to humor dh and camp this year, too. Got out of it the past 2 years with being sick and pregnant and then the baby was little. But this year, we're off to Zion at the end of next month.

I was just trying to explain to my dh and daughters why I don't want to do school outside today - and I gave two of the same reasons you did (bugs and temperature)! I much prefer to look at the weather out the window than to experience it - and camping and picnicking make it even worse. Dh has figured out, I think, that I am never going to actually LIKE camping - though we do it anyway because he and the girls do like it, and he tries to do some things I like to do at the same time (driving through the countryside, shopping, etc.). Don't worry, even incompatible people can live together in harmony! ;)

As for the nature walk thing, I don't really mind that with just two kids, but with four it would be hard. We try to do some of that when we camp, and I keep thinking about taking the kids to the nearby state park (though I haven't done that yet)! Other than that it doesn't get done. Maybe your dh could take a hand in this part of your kids' education? :)

I can relate to it because my sister-in-law is the same way. Your wording is so funny!

• May. 17, 2006 - I agree w/ you!

I just found your blog (from SL) and have enjoyed reading!! I don't like outside either and we are farmers! LOL I was talking w/ a friend at quilt guild and she said she doesn't sew much in summer. That is my main sewing time even tho my sewing room is in the basement as we don't school "officially" during the summer.

I also insist on hotels for vacations (when we have them!) I have a brother whose family backpacks (i.e. 10 days in the wilderness w/ dehydrated food!) and a sister that tent camps. My other sister and I prefer Embassy Suites near the mall! ;-)
