• Apr. 17, 2006 - I think differently!

I was astounded, in talking to a homeschool friend of mine the other day.  She signs for a deaf child at her church, and came to an event at our church, to also sign for her.  In the course of a general discussion, she mentioned to me that she has signed for a lot of people, and it is very, very rare to find a parent who also signs!   Often, the parents ask her to interpret for them, so they can have a discussion with a child about some issue.

Is it all that weird to go to an effort to talk to your kids?   I can't imagine how it could possibly work, to raise a child you couldn't communicate with.

I didn't know I was that different.

That IS interesting about non-signing parents. There's a center for the deaf not far from us, and I was thinking of going and taking classes so I could sign with my dc. None of them are deaf or hoh, I just think it would be a good skill for all of us to have.

That is kinda sad, actually. I know I would definately put forth the time and effort to learn. :(

Hi, I found your blog through TOG! I am rseriously considering the switch to TOG for my 8 children this new school year. Anyway, 2 of my children are deaf. We found out our 11dd was deaf when she was 6 months old. We started taking ASL (American Sign Language) classes, and now 11 years later I still learn new things about the language. It is a difficult language to maintain if you do ot use it regularly. I am blessed to have my children home with me, many other families with deaf children have them attend a deaf school. Most of the kids live there and only come home on the weekends. That makes it hard for the parents to master sign language. I am not making excuses as I believe laziness is a large part of it but we experience this with our extended family. Grandparents who took a couple of sign languae classes but do not see our kids enough and have lost what they learned. It is sad.
Blessings,
Andrea
