• Oct. 31, 2006 - Something AWANA doesn't cover, which our kids really, really need
Last week, I was struck with a realization. I was talking to my 10yo dd
about fear, and I said, "Tell yourself some Bible verses about fear,
and that will help you trust and not be afraid."
She responded, "I don't KNOW any Bible verses about fear."
How could that be? She has memorized AWANA verses for YEARS, plus other
Bible verse songs we have on CD, plus Sunday school and VBS for
years....... So I got out her AWANA books for the last couple years, to
copy some off for her. I figured if they were already familiar to her,
she would remember them better.
There weren't any.
There were a lot about "who God is," or "who Jesus is," which have an
indirect relevance. There were a lot about what the Bible is, as well
as some about salvation. By far the majorinty were about "how to live a
good Christian life." (I mean, probably 75% of them.) I was really
surprised. They are about being kind to others, reading the Bible,
going to church, etc.
They are good verses. But they are not giving our kids the tools they
need to deal with the 21st century world they live in. My daughter was
lying awake at night, afraid, and nobody was giving her any tools to
help her trust!!!
I apologized to her, for not having realized this.
I also typed out a bunch of Psalms and other verses about God being our
Refuge, and caring for us, in BIG type, and put them up around her bed.
They are big enough to read with her night-light. She has slept MUCH
better since then, not complaining about lack of sleep a single night
since I did this, a week ago.
I can't believe I didn't realize it before. I know it's not Awana's
"fault," but I just thought they were covering what she needed. I had
not thought through all the issues, soon enough.
